DVDShrink 1.02 released

"...DVD Shrink is software to backup DVD disks. You can use this software in conjunction with DVD burning software of your choice, to make a backup copy of any DVD video disk..."

It"s like DVD2one but it"s free! :)

Did you have to do anything special to get it to work. I am only able to get it to work from the DVD. I am unable get it to do anything from files on the hard drive.

If I choose Re-encode, I get "File Doesn't Exist" when I open the .ifo file.

If I choose Re-author, and click Add I get a DVDShrink has had a Fatal Error.

Any suggestions.

You probably had those files ripped in "IFO" mode instead of "File" mode.
I'm currently processing a movie from the DVD drive. The speed is excelent  Doing "The Green Mile", a 3 hour movie, and recompressing time is ~1 hour 10 minutes.

This thing ROCKS

syk2c11 04-08-2003 09:01 AM

Hi there,
Anyone has any comment on quality of the final output produced by DVD Shrink?

kwag 04-08-2003 09:18 AM

Last night I did "The Bourne Identity". To me, it looks as good as DVD2ONE, but it's much faster in transcoding. I'll probably do the same movie today with DVD2ONE, and then compare some scenes

-kwag

kwag 04-08-2003 10:33 AM

And the winner is ...

DVD2ONE Screenshot:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/archives/i.../2003/01/4.png

DVD Shrink Screenshot:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/archives/i.../2003/04/1.png

I can see who the clear winner is 8)
If you can't, use vhelp's "PicSwitch", and you will see the obvious

Both screenshots were taken from the same frame of the movie "The Bourne Identity". Right at the beginning of the movie, on the first lightning flash. This scene can't be more complex :!: Water, small particles (rain), etc. It was encoded with DVD2ONE as "Movie only", and also with DVD Shrink, also in movie only (Encode Level 3) .

@Kwag,

I tried DVDShrink and ditto to WWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOWWWWWW!!!
CCE is the real picture quality test against DVDShrink. If it equals or
comes close, with that speed and is free, then what a wounderful life
this is :D The Author even wants suggestions for upgrades, like
refinement of encoding compression, etc. I still use KVCD with Tok
and woundered when the audio (.ac3 file) will be automated from Tok.
For my laptop which only has a CD rom to play movies, KVCD is
great :D

jamesp 04-08-2003 02:52 PM

Kwag,

Bloody Hell! This looks great! Does anyone know, could these transcoding programs benefit from the KVCD matrix to provide even better compression? Or are they limited to the matrix that was used when the movie was encoded? Could they take out the overscan etc? Oh - sooo many questions and no one to ask?!?!?!?! :D

I guess telling him to shrink a DVD to 800 MBwon't work (or maybe 1600MB?), or???

And there's just no way (yet) to put ~6 hours full D-1 on a DVD with great quality, except with KDVD

You can see the winner just by looking at it, but PicSwitch highlights it even more

Yes, you can :)
But make sure you rip in "File" mode. Not in "IFO" mode.
Use DVD Decrypter if possible

DVD Shrink version 1.03

Updated today. Read news and update link on main page www.kvcd.net

jamesp 04-10-2003 07:47 AM

When a transcoder Compresses I, P and B frames, does anyone know how it actually does this? Does it actually compress the frame as a JPEG with higher compression or does it do something else internally? If it compresses the image somehow, could a Transcoder use Avisynth somehow to compress Frames (SpacialSmoothing, Merge Chorma and DCTFilter). That would bring the Filesizes down even further!

Trying out DVDShrink. My WINDVD SE doesn't allow viewing folder DVD files without upgrading.

:?: What is a good freebee program for playing DVDShrink produced files prior to burning? Ifoedit is a bit complicated for just preplaying the film.

I've been working with "StarWars II", which is 2 hours 20 minutes. I seem to be limited to level 5 compression due to file size. How did you handle "The Green Mile"? It seems compression beyond 1 or 2 is discouraged due to quality issues.

I encoded as movie only, stripping all menus, and left only one audio channel. The result, looks like crap , because it's a very long movie. But then, it also looks like crap with DVD2ONE and IC 8)

Really shows my ignorance, but

How do I burn a DVD from HD files created by DVDShrink? I have latest version of NERO and Swim Fan, which doesn't require compression according to DVDShrink.

Download ImgTool here: http://www.coujo.de :D

How do I get rid of this? Please HELP

I am using DVD Shrink 1.03 and followed the instructions from the Movie Only Guide posted on these forms. I used the movie only Guide and burned the movie on Pioneer A04 with Parrsi's burning software. The movie burned ok and when I installed it in my stand alone DVD player, this is what I got - a graphic that resembales file folder with the following - Menu and the box with type: ROOT (on the left side) and all the movie files names on the right side - VTS_01_1,VTS_01_2, VTS_01_3,VTS_01_5, VTS_01_5 with each file name a RED icon before the file name. You can nevigate through these files with your remote. Also there is a box at the bottom that says Play Mode.

My problem:

1. How do get rid of this from the DVD - I just want the movie to start?

2. When you skip chapters, I loose the Audio and have to go back to the above menu and start all over again to have the audio.

What am I doing wrong? Please HELP

Thanks.

ImgTool works with Nero's API. You just need to install a demo version of Nero, and that will work fine :D
Just download Nero from www.ahead.de and install it, then download ImgTool version 1.00.4 and install that. Now after you finish encoding your movie with DVD Shrink to any temporary directory, select that directory with ImgTool and burn :D

HI KWAG,

Thanks a million. Will try it out tonite. Thanks.

Jeff

nicksteel 04-11-2003 01:51 PM

:D Used ImgTool for a DVD Decrypter rip of a 84 minute film. As the film required no compression, everything worked perfectly through DVDShrink into NERO.

8O I'm looking forward to improvements in DVDShrink that allow effective compression of longer films.

:D There must be a potential DVDShrink/KWAG linkage in there somewhere.

Thanks.

@All,

Just tried DVDShrink (v1.03) + DVD2one (v1.1.2) on HP_SC.
Results are FANTASTIC!!!!!

DVDShrink: (movie-only files 7.48GB)

1) Removed audio except English.
2) Removed ending credits.
3) Copy files with changes to HD

DVD2one:

1) Source files (source from DVDShrink 6.78GB)
2) Target file size 4.38GB
3) Encode movie

Burn with ImgTool on 1 DVD-R. Picture quality excellent :D

Burning w/ dvdshrink

Hello all:

I just joined today, and as you can perhaps detect, I am a new user of DVD burning tools and or programs.
1) I have properly loaded Amadeus into my har drive, have compressed and was getting ready to burn it, and run into problems. Please note that I am following mrbass guide to the letter, ahowever, when sending the files to the HP 200e, via firewire, I receive the following message: "DVDshrink encountered an error and can not continue, ioctlAgid failed.fatal. Reason unknown". PLease note that the same message has appeared with 3 +RW discs. 2 of them were erased (full mode) and the other one was brand new. The size of the files is 4.08 Giga, after compression.

2) Then I tried burning it w/ Nero, and it appeared to have worked. Except that neither my dvd-rom, nor my dvd players recognized this disc as DEVD. I loaded the dvdshrink compressed files, with no modifications into Nero's UDF/ISO mode. Perhaps I need to do one more step porior to burning the files with Nero.

My setup is: IBM laptop, PIII, 800 MHxz, 512 Ram, a total of 140 G (two drives, using the external drive to load the files from DVD, and the laptop's drive for the compressed files.

Please help me.

Tx
