Last year for kvcd.net, site will close!

Hi everyone,

This is probably a sad news for some people, but the site is living its last year. At least under my ownership.

The hosting which was $95.40 since 2006 was raised to $107.40 in 2010, and this year I'm discovering the bill: $128.50.

I'm sorry to tell that I won't continue after this year. I don't have any personnal interrest in keeping the site now I moved to new things since several months (h264 and AVCHD mostly).

If someone wants to take over me, I'll be pleased to transfer the site ownership to him or her.

I finish with a thought to Karl for having made this to come alive.

KVCD.net Ending

Hi Phil,

after a long time I came around and saw your announcement regarding the kvcd.net hosting issue. Thanks a lot to you by keeping this site the last years active, even if I haven't been here that much anymore.

This has been a nice community and I loved it. Many new friends from all over the world.

Maybe we could open a little unofficial blogsite - not for video based discussions, but just to keep the personal contact.

So Karl, Phil, Rui, Boulder, digitall.doc ... and many others from the good old times y forgot to mention ... whats your opinion?

Cheers to you Phil and all!
Andrej

Hi Andrej,

I even forgot we had this special part of the forum where to speak between "us" :).

Thaat's my pleasure to have kept it open till now. I would prefer to let it as it is, but I really don't have the mood to look for a new host and transfer it (not sure we can ever find better).

I don't have any place beside here where to host a discussion. I'm now one of the administrators of the biggest french home-theater site (homecinema-fr.com) and I have to say my activity in video domain and on internet for a whole is limited to it :-/

But let us now if you have any suggestion ;).

incredible 12-12-2011 02:11 PM

I just had a reply from karl and he gave me his email address, ... so whenever its possible we can start a little blog.

Do you got contacts from Rui, Digitall Doc and others from the "core-memebers" of the kvcd forum ancient time?

What happened to VMesquita? I figured out that his domain isn't acive any longer?

Cheers,
Andrej

Dialhot 12-12-2011 05:31 PM

No contact with anyone. I always anser to message here within a couple of days but don't use personal mail. See my PM ;).

Kvcd.net will close?

Hi guys.
I don't know for how long I haven't set a foot in here. Maybe 2006?
Well, today I missed the action that used to go around here when we were testing new ideas or new tools almost a decade ago.
Although I am a shitty friend that rarely jumps in to say hi, I would really be very sad if one day this forum would close.
Big hug to Glazend, Kwag, Dialhot, incredible, etc. Can't remember all the nicks but I do remember all of you.
Cheers guys

digitall.doc 01-20-2012 07:31 PM

Hi Rui,
I also lived those days of scripts testing, matrix adjustments, trying new mencoder settings, and then burning tests and visioning them on TV, and back to post... Hours and hours of testing.
I learnt a lot (all!) in this forum about video filtering with avisynth, and encoding, and KVCD/KDVD creation. I discovered a hobby,...
I also visited Doom9 those days, but never joined that forum. I felt here 'at home', everybody wanted to help and learn, very good mood. There were a lot of us wanting to cooperate, a community sharing interest.

When DVD burners became more affordable, our forum began to decline (less popular?), since it was initially focused in obtaining the maximum compression keeping the best quality in a CD (KVCD). With more space there was less need to compress a lot.
I remember I suggested then we could try to focus in a new (those days) format: h264 and AVCHD. We could take profit of our enthusiastic community and experience in video encoding, and try to take the better of the h264 format.

I continue to visit this site from time to time, and see how things are going, if there are any news, if there is somebody with an unanswered question,...
It is sad if all this comes to an end, but I understand the point of Phil.

I will also remember all of you.
May the force be with you.

Hello,

FYI, I had two people interrested for taking over the site. The first one is member since 2004 and has... 0 message. I declined.

The second is member since 2006 and has something like 1 message :?
I asked him more information and never had answer to my mail.

I prefer to have the site down than transfer it to "unkown" people.

Hello everybody,

I haven't done kvcd for a while (or any other encoding for that matter) but this makes me feels nostalgic.

Indeed, I've learn a lot, here, about encoding, video, codec... A lot of useful informations, not only for doing kvcd.
I gonna miss this forum. :(

When is the deadline, Phil ?

Dialhot 01-21-2012 03:57 PM

The date is on first page of the site :o

The same from here!

Hello, havent you thought leaving 1 page web containing links to matrix and tools mounted and a nice message on a free host, for nostalgic reasons. I see no harm.

Dialhot 03-15-2012 07:01 PM

The whole site can be transfered to any place you want to move it, the bandwith it is using now is very low. But I won't have time to maintain it myself as I plan to move again (I moved in 2010), taking a new job in an other country.

So the proposal to transfer it is still on the table.

tengo6dedos 03-17-2012 04:06 PM

What are the proposal requirements plus costs? maybe if you add that more people will be interested or even me.

Dialhot 03-17-2012 07:06 PM

I don't understand the question.

tengo6dedos 03-31-2012 07:47 AM

I mean you telling the responsibilities of this web could stimulate more people.

Dialhot 03-31-2012 09:00 AM

I sill don't understand what you mean by "Proposal requirement + costs": explain that ;). The cost I already indicated it. Requirement, you mean what is needed by the site to work?

rds_correia 04-17-2012 05:10 PM

This doesn't seem fair.
kvcd.net should never cease to exist.
There's just too much valuable information in here.
Phil, could you tell me the space used by the database? Is it mysql or postgre? I believe that phpbb only works with mysql, right?
How much does the kvcd.net domain cost?
I've seen cheap domains starting as low as $3/yr.
I guess it's all about the cost of the domain because I could try to host it at home.
Got a 1Mbit upload fiber connection and a small ARM based server running on Arch Linux.
I guess it could be done.
But I since I don't visit here much, I would need the help of others to moderate and administer the forum.

Dialhot 04-17-2012 05:28 PM

The db is in Mysql (there is actually 3 SQL db, because of the portal and a web analyser tool) The total site is contained in a 1.5 GB zip file ( less than 2 GB uncompressed), it is very small.

The domain is currently included in the hosting price. And this last one is expensive because it is WAY too much for our needs (1.5 TB space / 400 GB monthly bandwith... can you believe it !).

The actual bandwith was far less than this this year:

Code:

Month        Unique visitors        Number of visits        Pages        Hits        Bandwidth
Jan 2012        3,895        7,368        27,361        105,183        3.22 GB
Feb 2012        3,653        6,813        23,910        83,745        3.42 GB
Mar 2012        3,564        6,476        32,382        87,137        3.59 GB
Apr 2012        2,017        3,198        9,403        31,349        1.57 GB

Total        13,129        23,855        93,056        307,414        11.79 GB

The outbound bandwith toped at 224 kbit/s today, with an average on 24 hours of 9 kit/s. The daily average on the last year toped at 38 kbit/s.

As I've said, the needs are very modest.
Nevertheless I'm still surprised by the number of visitor per day (> 120).

rds_correia 04-18-2012 09:47 AM

Wow! 1,5GB?
I thought you were going to say it has 200/300MB.
My server's hdd space is limited.
I would have to slim the database down a bit, possibly removing attachments and moving them to places such as ImageShack and Tinypic (pics and vids).
I guess if it goes as low as 500/600MB it could be done.
If only I could rent "kvcd.net" for ~10€/yr, I guess I would be tempted to try.
Does anyone know a cheap domain registrar?
I just ran a query on namecheap.com and found out that a .net domain might cost $10.69, a .org would cost $9.69 and a .info would cost $4.98.
Did you save any $$ from user account registrations that can be used to pay for the domain rent?
I am willing to pay the ISP bill and the electric bill but I would rather not pay for the domain bill.
One other question is, can the domain be pointed to a dynamic dns account? For instance, I would need to point kvcd.net to kvcd.mooo.com (my subdomain at freedns.afraid.org).
I guess this would not be so difficult.

Bottom line: It all boils down to database slimming via moving attachments to video/pics hosting sites and to a cheap domain registrar.
Then I have 4 months to try it out on my hardware.
If it works, I would be damn happy to host the forum (hopefully) for a long time.
Cheers
