Servicing and testing a TBC-1000?
 
I have a DataVideo TBC-1000 time base corrector. It's been sitting idle for years. I inspected the internals before powering it on again and noticed the caps on the 'power board' are swollen and one of them leaking from the bottom:

The specs of the two swollen caps are:

Size: 10mm D, 16mm H, 5mm LP
Spec: 1000uf 25v 105C

None of the other caps on the unit look swollen, just the two larger ones on the power board.

The datasheet for the step-down converter on the circuit board states: Capacitors with low impedance for high-frequency ripple current must be used.

Seems the Panasonic EEU-FR1E102L capacitor would be suitable:

Wondering whether to replace the small capacitor in the middle while I'm at it?

It's specs are:

Size: 5mm D, 11mm H , 3mm LP
Spec: 0.47uf 50V 105C

Once repaired is there a way I can verify the TBC is working?

Removed and measured the old caps on the power board. The small one should give an indication of how much life is left on the rest of the capacitors on the other boards in the TBC.

The 1000uf caps on the power board were totally shot and measured around 300uf. Both had swollen tops, and one was bulging out the bottom.

The small Wendell 0.47uf cap measured fine though at 0.533uf so resoldered that back.

FWIW: this links is to the badcaps web site and contains a list of the makes of known bad caps, mainly found on PC motherboards.

Wendell is on the list, and they appear to be out of the cap business these days.

With the Panasonic AG-1980 it was mainly SMD electrolytic caps, but elsewhere on the above site indicates other caps may be involved as well, mainly from the listed brands. Using an in-circuit ESR tester can help identify suspect caps and save a lot of desoldering/soldering. The link below is one model I've used with success, but there are a number on the market.

I'm still not seeing anything wrong here. The TBC-1000 unit shown looks fine.

Don't just take apart equipment for the hell of it.
Don't do something that could be potentially catastrophics, to an expensive item, without being completely confident the work is absolutely required.

AG-1980Ps suffer bad caps. Not TBC-1000s.

DataVideo spec sheets are not available for it.
Repairing these has proven very difficult. I've done some TBC-1000 work, total unit teardowns, but stopped short of recapping (because I no longer have the steady hand needed to solder, and even the best recap job can be iffy at times).
