I was afraid of this. No, actually, not afraid ... I knew it. Some technical reason, some gut feelings. This is not a simple issue, we're all screwed.

I actually have a TBC-3000 that isn't showing these issues yet, but further testing needed. But my other pair both have it now. These have been set aside for more than a year now, and I've relied on my other units.

I need to do some more research, this story isn't over yet. :hmm:

I suspect it's the OKI RAM modules or cold solder joints on the motherboard.

I'll need to research every component. While you could attempt to narrow it down, I have an advantage because I own multiple versions of multiples DataVideos. It should be easy to eliminate shared chips, focusing only on uniques to that model series. That may not net results, but it is a start.

I was hoping it was simply caps, but I knew that had to be too hopeful, based on what I know about DataVideo TBCs.

For me, this is a project for mid-2026. My units can stay in a drawer, I'm not hurting for TBCs at this moment.

If you need someone to test things with, I'm available. I see this problem only occurs in the first generations of the TBC-3000. If you'd like, we can both thoroughly analyze the motherboard and its components.

No, this is present in multiple generations of unit.

The 5th had a low production, and to date, I've only met one person with one (and he's a forum member here). So far, the 5th was fine, but he's not re-tested it in many months now.

What I really need now is photos of Master Tape's TBC-3000, preferably both before and after recap. (Tip: Always take photos before, and again after.)

Personal stuff got in the way and I haven’t messed with any of that since July. I’m about to start back though after I repaint that room. Hopefully it’s not showing anything like that. I haven’t had issues soo far. Mine barely has any use but idk if that is why it doesn’t have that issue or not. It just has a month of use from the original owner where he did his personal project then me using it on weekends before work. I am easy on it too. I just use it for 2 hours at a time and I have a dehumidifier in that room. I never used it without a CyberPower UPS because of forum advice. I live out in the country anyways so the power grid isn’t too bad out here. I doubt it’s because of the generation but even if it was it wouldn’t help anyone out because of the rarity of that generation. I am not sure but I hope I don’t seeing it. Anyways Happy Thanksgiving.

As luck would have it...

Can I get the high-res in an attached zip?

I'll have to consult my docs to confirm, but I believe that's a 2nd gen board. However, this problem is present in 3rd and 4th as well. 1st/5th are rare, low production, not important right now, though having access to a 5th is good.

<bah!>, I always forget about sanded chips on TBCs. This will be more difficult. In fact, I'm now vaguely remembering that I'd done some initial research back in 2023, when I first noticed the issue.

I know some people I can pull into this conversation (probably in private), but not until mid-2026 or so.

This is currently not a hopeful situation. :(

Less use might (or not) have any bearing here.

Correct, the relative rarity mostly makes it a possible constant (but still very much a variable). It's unknown x2 for this conversation. Possibly interesting, possibly noise.

Have a good holiday week/weekend. :)

Gary34 11-27-2025 08:44 PM

You are right it is an unknown because I have nothing to compare it to. Well also you’d need test tapes and a point of reference. There’re not many people that can determine how good a certain frame TBC is. I don’t think I can help you guys but if/when you think I can pm me.

I did have. I made a smoked turkey for it and probably ate too much. I hope you have a good holiday also.

Dear All, has there been a solution already to this issue? I don't see anything added here or in the other topic on recapping.
Thank you.
