Do I need an ES10 capturing from TRV460 S-video?

I understand that the TRV460 Handycam has TBC but I read somewhere that this is only enabled when outputting through Firewire. Is this correct?

For my analog tapes, I have been using this workflow:

TRV460 --Svideo--> Diamond VC500 -> Virtualdub (Lagarith)

Should I instead be doing this (I have one lying around)?

TRV460 --Svideo--> ES10 --Svideo--> Diamond VC500 -> Virtualdub (Lagarith)

This thought came into my head when watching the tape played back through the Firewire after the cam passed the tapes through its internal ADC. I thought "wow that looks super smooth" but from my reading I know that this is 4:1:1 sub-sampling and it is in a lossy format. But I was wondering if that smoothness is a result of some deinterlacing performed in the TRV460 ADC or if the TBC was only being activated because it was passing through the ADC. I will give the passthrough a shot with the Video8 tapes but I previously only thought this was helpful for my SVHS tapes.

Thanks!

I just made a minute long comparison, on a frame by frame basis, the ES10 seems to desaturate the image a slight amount. Motion wise, the "smoothness" I witnessed through Firewire was not there. Is there a software filter I can apply to the videos when creating the "distribution" copies that I can get that nice smooth playback effect?

The TBC in the camera is active on both firewire and analog outputs. It doesn't do any deinterlacing, maybe the "smoothness" was the player automatically deinterlacing the captured DV file?

Yeah, you're just viewing your lossless captures without double-frame-rate deinterlacing and comparing that to (probably) hardware deinterlacing by your player. It's recognizing the DV as interlaced but can't recognize the lossless as such.

This video has some issues, but describes interlacing well enough:

Thanks, that makes sense! So my planned workflow after I capture all the tapes (without the ES10) is as follows:

1. Cut lossless full tapes into lossless scenes
2. Convert lossless scenes into compressed copies for distribution using Yadif 2x, making sure to use correct field order

I know you mentioned that the video has problems, and I've seen in other posts that Handbrake is not the best tool for creating the distribution copy. Anyone have any suggestions? I've been playing around with avidemux but I don't see Yadif 2x in the filter list, only Yadif. I'll also keep doing some searching because I'm sure this information is buried in this forum somewhere.

A higher-quality option (the best, actually) is QTGMC. The FAQ in that video's description even mentions it.

Install Hybrid by Selur for a nice GUI, and more importantly, you then don't have to spend hours manually installing the script and its dependencies.

Learn Hybrid's more-complex but more powerful/tweakable options instead of Handbrake.
