@closecall: perhaps too late to help, but I had similar problems. Turns out with me, I had to adjust the tape guides in the playback deck. They are on the left and right of the head drum. Be careful if you do it, a little goes a long way, and make note of your starting point so you can return them if once finished. It would be hard to adjust a camcorder, easier for a playback machine. I had to do this often for various dv tapes. Usually a quarter to a half turn is all you need. I left the covers off my machine because many adjustments were necessary with different tapes.
