White flimmer of 8mm tapes?

1 Attachment(s)
Hello

I have some 8mm tapes where in some clips there are a white transparent flimmer, according to the video.
The camera I have is DCR-TRV240E

What could the reason for this be?

Here is another example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBgOL_Z5Zfc

First thing I'd try is another camera, a different tape that you know was recorded originally on a different camera, and different cables to see if that changes anything.

Could be that the issue is baked in from the original recording camera, bad capacitors, or possibly even a pinch roller issue. The pinch rollers on those sometimes like to come loose. Other common problems are often fixed by detaching the flat ribbon cables inside and reseating them (pushing them back in to their jacks), but there's obviously some risk of damage when you open the camera up to get at them and work with those potentially fragile cables.

You could also try wiggling the cables at either end while capturing to see if that reproduces or makes the problem better or worse which might indicate a conductivity issue at the connectors or cables.

I have continued with two older tapes from 1991-1992 (not sure if my grandparents had another camcorder then). I haven't noticed the same issues with these tapes. This makes me think that perhaps not the camcorder is the problem.

I also have the same movies captured from old vhs tapes and did not notice the same problem in these. Could it be something with the 8mm tapes that is defective?

I've not seen, or maybe not noticed this effect before. Except for this pulsating horizontal bands of luminance issue the rest of the captured picture and the audio on the stairs clip also seems OK. It seems unlikely it will be a fault in the 8mm tape. I cant think of what could have happened to the tape physically or magnetically which would cause such a fault. It seems more likely an issue either in the recording and/or in the processing somewhere downstream of the actual pickup of the signal off the tape in that camera. I'd try the same tapes in another good 8mm camera or player as well as other tapes known to be good. It's all about making the comparisons to narrow down the suspects.

I have done some more testing and it might be related to having TBC activated. I will turn it off and do a retake.
