There is one more thing to note about bank transfers in Europe. All you need is the IBAN bank account number. The recipient's name is for informational purposes only (it will be changed soon due to scammers). If I send you my IBAN number and you specify Joseph Biden as the recipient and the subject "for donations to cure Alzheimer's disease", I will still receive the money.

Edit: In case someone gives you "Dan's bank account" in the UK or anywhere to transfer money to, it would be appropriate to report this to that bank (the bank code is included in the IBAN number).

Yes, correct. I wasn't going to tell the scammer why he's a dumbass, but that's part of it. Deceased persons cannot be named on, and certainly not hold, bank accounts. Not anywhere in the civilized world that I'm aware. Furthermore, debtors are not legally allowed to collect funds from a decedent's bank account. Banking laws are very strict here, because accounts could be used for money laundering.

I sent an email to their phishing address, but nothing may come of that. Somebody in UK (or elsewhere EU?) probably needs to call them. I no longer have an international calling plan.

That won't work, it's the responsibility of each individual bank to process and take into account warnings about potential risks. Until someone who has been scammed has reported it to the police and they have not initiated criminal proceedings. The rules that only the account number should be taken into account for IBAN payments have caused many problems, not only in cases of fraud. It's enough to make a mistake and enter the wrong account number for the money to be transferred, and then the PITA procedures to get it back (if it works at all) are started. That's why changes are now expected in the IBAN payment rules, but no one can figure out what to do with the recipient's name/title - it is often entered incompletely or abbreviated, and then the payment will have to be suspended. I don't see a particular problem there - the recipient of the payment should indicate the exact name in the payment details as it is registered in the bank. And if the account number does not match the registered name, the recipient's bank is obliged to suspend it, not transfer it to the recipient's account. That, at least, would be correct.

After 2 more days of no contact from Jangrockwood, I've banned the account.

However, not without some last minute due diligence. The email address used for that account is "nickkykornpichet@gmail.com". Google has no results for that full email. But when you put "nickkykornpichet" into Google, one of the first results is some sort of softcore Thai gay porn on Instagram. :sick:

We all wish the SingMai SM03 would have worked. It never did. It likely never existed beyond prototypes.

That's not entirely true. I know two people who have the SM03 device.

One has the old and the new device, and the other has the new device.

As far as I know, the devices were only manufactured after orders were placed.

Singmai was basically a small one-man company.

Assuming all is accurate, this is great news, he made some items before passing. But I've not seen/read any feedback on performance. If he was one-off making these units manually, then I'd suggest those are all unique prototypes. It's not really non-prototype until you start some sort of scale production, even if small.

I would trust the person who owns both devices for 90% and the person who owns the new SM03 device for 99.9%.

On the other point, I agree with you. Somehow, they are all prototypes. I don't think the devices were intended for mass production.
For your information, I ordered the old device in February 2023 and was told that it would be ready in a week. Then it was two weeks, then three weeks. They couldn't get the Altera FPGA anymore. The alternatives didn't work, and the result was that the SM03 was discontinued and my order was canceled.

From this, I conclude that there are no remaining stocks and that they only produced after someone placed a order. The same applies to the new device. Anyone who has read his online diaries can then figure out the rest for themselves.

Some posts make it sound as if the SM03 is the Holy Grail that just needs to be found. That is not the case.

As far as I can see, none of the people who contacted Dan by email received a scam email.

I notice that some of the posters there have the same doubts and experiences that I do, the old "pics or it doesn't exist" rightful attitude. reelyinteresting was especially spot-on in his comments.

In that same LDdb thread, nidi posted images of the inside of the v2(?) blue unit internals. That Altera is not the only old chip that was used. I wonder where he even got some of those, as some are at least 15 years old. I'm disappointed by what I see there, and I now heavily doubt the SM03 would have ever worked well.

That's good to know. I wonder why Barry was singled out? This whole situation was odd. But I've been online for 30+ years, BBS before it. In that time, the one thing I've never seen is an obvious scam/beg/request for money actually turn into a legit business proposition. Especially not when the account has some loose ties to apparent porn.
