After battling the infamous "TV failed to initialize the video" for 4 days and also having read countless threads here over and over, I thought I'd log my progress and solution for anyone that might get something out of it if they have the same issue.

I built a "new" WinXP SP2 box over the summer including re-capping a Soyo motherboard (SY-P4I845PEISA) and used an IDE to SD card adapter for the HDD. Made it much much easier to roll back to a clean XP install.

There was no stopping WinXP from auto installing it's own video drivers (the motherboard doesn't have on-board video), so my first attempt was to manually install the driver using the 180-V01084-100.iso (mounted using Virtual CloneDrive).

I installed/replaced the video driver manually via Device Manager (Update driver > Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) > 'Dont search. I will choose the driver to install' etc). This seemed to work ok. As mentioned elsewhere on the boards, the driver was now 6.14.10.6404.

Next installation steps were:
-WDM from :\install\WDM
-UCI (DOA?) from :\install\UCI
-Soundblaster official drivers from CD (I have a Soundblaster ZS installed)
-MMC 8.8 using the .iso setup.exe installer.

Then, after this, depending on what software I tried (Windows Movie Maker, VirtualDub, MMC TV) I got variations of the following error:

The TV Player Failed to initialize the video.
Unable to start capture video.
Video device already in use.
Error starting the device.

Most online solutions suggested another app was running and taking over the driver / overlay eg VLC Player. I couldn't find this as the problem.

In hindsight I think the issue was with the manual installing the driver / WDM steps.

I also suspected it was my Canopus AD?? and firewire card I had installed, so I removed these for the next testing. In the end they weren't the issue. Neither was the soundcard.

Fresh WinXP and I started again:

- Soundblaster card install using Audigy_SupportPack_7_0 rather than the official .iso that came with the card.

- WinXp once again auto installed the video drvers, so I uninstalled the card in device manager.

I tried 180_V01060_100.ISO video driver installer and it crashed on setup.exe "inf error. video driver not found"

I also tried the original 180-V01084-100.iso driver setup.exe (rather than installing via Device Manager), but it also crashed with the same error.

THE SOLUTION!

- For me at least.
I grabbed the 2001-2005 ATI drivers archive from The Internet Archive (I think they're all been culled from these forums anyway - the text definitely has).
This sketchy looking website also has Mediafire links to the same set with a few extra files and more years eg 1997-2001, 2006-2010.

After downloading it all I tried 6-2_xp-2k_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_30152.exe from \ATIDriverCollection\Official ATI Drivers\ATI Radeon 8000 & 9000 Series\WINXP directory. As far as I could tell it was one of the later driver versions.

It unpacked and I ran it from root of C: (it complained about directory levels or some such when ran from MyDocs).

This installer gave me the option of Display Drivers, WDM Integrated Drivers and Catalyst Control Panel).
Display and WDM installed fine; CCC would crash when trying to run it (after installing fine), so I didn't bother installing it again on my next test.

After rebooting, Windows completed installing more ATI drivers for the card, so be patient here until it finishes.

...and that was it :laugh: ... All programs started the capture driver fine (Virtual dub & Win Movie Maker), and WinXP 'Add Remove Programs' control panel even had "ATI - software uninstall utility" & "ATI Display Driver".

I test installed MMC8.8 solo and also mmc-8-7-0-0.exe for the TV app and it was fine.

Other files I tested during this journey:
- wme-radeon-7-88-030430m-008946c-efg.exe (Display driver setup.exe - inf crash error)
- ATI Control panel control-panel-7-88-030430m-008946c-efg.exe installed fine.
- MMC 8.1 (mmc-8-1-0-0-dao-mdac.exe) never completed (just closed, no error - I think DAO installed).

The end! I hope this helps someone in the future.

My summary... As everyone says, video drivers and WDM have to be installed and working first before attempting the MMC etc; but it's hard to tell if WDM etc installed fine when there are no errors given during installation! :hmm::smack:

I dug out my old Dell Dimension 8300 desktop windows XP computer from about 2003, with AGP8x slot, but when I looked inside I could see a few caps bulging so took it to my engineer friend and after a few weeks he had it all working 100%

The DVI output from the X800 goes into my B&O Beovision 26" TV, as does the stereo sound output from the X800 into the Phono RCA plugs on the TV

Just a quick follow up to my post above.

- I failed to mention that my card is an AIW Radeon 9000 Pro

- The captured video had issues with stuttering when it came to deinterlacing and doubling the framerate (50fps) (I outlined the issue here)

Long story short I reinstalled the card using the drivers from the AMD website https://www.amd.com/en/support/graph...onder-9000-pro and a fresh base of WinXP SP2.

I just install the essential drivers from the two downloads:

1. Catalyst Software Suite 6.11:
Display Driver & WDM drivers.
I didn't install Catalyst Control Center - It failed, plus I don't need it anyway.

2. DAO/MDAC package (Windows Media Encoder 9, DAO/MDAC.)

I still use Audigy Support Pack 7 for my Soundblaster Audigy 2.

I capture in VirtualDub1, so there is no need for MMC and all it's garbage IMHO (after reading all these posts I thought it was a necessity).

I got myself a nice NV-FS200 (PAL) to digitize some old family tapes, also managed to acquire a DMR-ES10 (PAL) very cheap in non-working condition and recapped the PSU to make it work again. As I read on the forum, I shouldn't use DMR-ES10 if the TBC on the VCR is enabled, so I'm going to stick with only VCR (TBC on) and try ES10 if I encounter any problematic tapes.

The main question though is the capture card in the chain. I have an old Leadtek TV2000XP Expert lying around, but I can also pretty cheaply get an ATI VIVO card - seems to be a Sapphire Radeon 9200. It is not the recommended AIW thing, though it appears to have Theater chip as well. Bonus points for regular S-Video in without any breakout cables - all other cards sold in my country are without any cabling whatsoever. Just wanted to confirm - are VIVO cards with Theatre chip provide a decent quality captures, as the AIW cards do? I'm attaching somewhat low res pics from the auction site, Rage Theater chip is quite visible, though. It's no Theater 200, but again, from what I learned here, there isn't much difference between the two.

I have the 180-V01084-100.iso burned to a disk and that seems like it's easy, but then I read a post that scared me into thinking I'd have to (somehow) get XP SP1 installed, install this from this image and then upgrade back to SP2? That seems... convoluted and as it was I had a fair bit of difficulty getting this rig talking to Win XP SP2. This post recommends using a 180-G01445-200 image (and implies the "-200" may suggest it's tested to work with SP2 flavors.) This seems like the way to go, but I wanted to pick your brains before I get some weird wrong-driver installed and have to start over.

No. The numbers from ATI are sometimes seemingly random. I wish it were that simple.

Go for it.
- The worst that can happen is you have to reinstall the OS. The computer won't catch fire, or zap you into Tron.
- The best that can happen is that everything goes as planed, the card works perfectly, and you'll be happily capturing (after you get a TBC).

There's so much ATI AIW info, I sometimes forget exact details. Are you saying that the ATI AIW 9000 AGP had two driver CD versions? That seems unlikely. In most cases, every card had only one setup/install CD. Yes, many cards will be interchangeable with CDs. But you ideally want to pair a 9000-era card with the installer. (It's the 7000 series cards that predates Catalyst and MMC8 that generally need newer install files, hence the downloads in this thread. And I do have many more ISO files, just not uploaded everything yet, got crazy sidetracked in 2020, still not fully caught up.)

Here's an image of the 180_V01111_100 Catalyst disc. Don't know what card it's good for, I originally bought it for my x800 and it didn't work. Thought I'd just post it here so my $20 wasn't entirely spent in vain.

Hi-I bought an ATI 8500 AGP card (see Attached pic)but it did not have an install CD. I installed it in a Dell Dimension 8100 with WIN XP Pro and it just installed itself and works fine as a video card. I tried installing the ATI All-In-Wonder Setup files from the earlier posts(181-G01116-110) iso burnt on a CD but it doesn't even try to install. I manually installed the ATI info exe file. I then installed the MMC 7.5 but I don't know how to get the control panel for capture since it does not appear to be installed at all. I didn't install the DVD player and the TV software. I have the Library and the TV tabs on the desktop but I don't see the actual control panel to capture video. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I am a long-term user but only just regged onto the forum. My cards have been around since 2004 and I will never sell them! Even the dead ones lol.

I have a niggly problem which is driving me mad, one of the cards has code-10 but will go away when I swap the card to another one that is exactly the same, part number, model, pcb the lot!

I have more of the same card but when you have more than one of these cards and they all came from the same source (ATI Canada) you know something is amiss when just one of these cards refuses to clear code-10 no matter what you do! :question:

Oh and BTW! I still have two retail boxed 9800 All in wonder cards. I have everything including the driver cd's if anyone is interested in me imaging them?

I noticed in this post here, the AIW 9700 Pro appears to be PAL. Does this mean it's the only one that can capture PAL media?

On Win 10 64 bit, got ATI TV Wonder VE (?) I got decades ago at a Goodwill. Been trying for years to get it to work. Only time I ever got it working was under Ubuntu years ago. Will any of the drivers etc on this thread help/work?

Do I need Crossbar Thingy for this capture device ?

Download ISO, mount ISO (MagicISO, MagicDisc).
Setup/install drivers. Not CMC.
Probably reboot.
Open VirtualDub, card should be there.

The 600 USB default audio levels are too high. It needs a registry hack, to adjust values from 100% (256) to 50% (128), I forget the db value offhand. Audio should always be captured at 50-66% of the system max, to avoid too low (insufficient gain, raising noise floor), or too loud/high (distortion). That quick proceed is outlined here.

Anyone seen any videos that compare the AIW card capture quality? I am still researching my workflow and have finally settled on Windows XP and getting an older AIW card. However, I feel like the only thing holding me back is trying to figure out which card is better. I feel like some video samples would help clear that up.

I'd personally like to see the PCI/PCI-E cards, but AGP would also be welcome.

Anyone has success installing drivers(especially WDM) for the AIW 9600 XT? I've tried the 180-V01084-100 iso linked in post #4, and also 180-V01085-100 iso which supposedly comes with this card, but in both cases I can only get the display driver working, not the WDM driver. I've selected to install ATI display driver, ATI WDM driver, MMC 8.8(which installs UCI) using the Atisetup.exe from the iso. After reading some of the other threads for the AIW 9600 XT where WDM drivers don't work, I've almost given up and am ready to buy a AIW 9200 card to (hopefully) avoid this driver headache.

I saw an older post from digicube sharing the MMC 9.13 disc for the ATI All-In-Wonder X1900 (Disc ID 180-V01114-100), but the Google Drive link is no longer working.

I’ve recently found the same X1900 card and would like to restore a proper setup with the official ATI MMC 9.13 software.

Would you happen to still have a working copy of that ISO, or know where it can be downloaded?
