Best drivers for ATI All In Wonder Radeon, Windows XP install?
I started my video capture hobby 11 years ago with a dazzle usb ( currently in a box collecting dust) but the good peaople at videohelp.com convinced me to go with the ati aiw card. They also stepped me through the proper install on a windows me system and it worked great(In fact I think I may looking for help from the same person previously known as lordsmurf). I took a long hiatus from the realm of video capture and now want to get back into. I want to make sure to install this card properly in my new system. Yes I know to read all the threads but like the admin says it can be complicated and harmful if not installed properly. My issue I am not sure which card I actually have most of the ones with downloads or RAR installs have a number associated with it but here is everything off the box.
ATI AIW Radeon 32mb ddr memory agp 4x/2x version DVI Output The system OS is Win XP Pro SP3 I would appreciate knowing which install is right for my card and system or where to find the number associated with my card the manual appears to cover the radeon,128 pro, and 128. |
The non-Pro 128 was a PCI card, not AGP, if I remember correctly. If you look at the card, you will not find a chip that says Rage Theatre. Only the 128 Pro and later models used the Rage Theatre (aka Theatre 100) chipset, followed by the Theatre 200 chipset in the 9000 series and later PCI-E cards.
That leaves the 128 Pro and the 7200 card (aka "ATI AIW 32MB DDR"). Use the files from this site, in this thread: http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/vide...der-hacks.html You can either use the CD ISO from post #4, or better yet, use the "6168" package 1st/2nd/3rd/4th files from the first post. And then install ATI MMC 8.7, regardless of whether you use the better drivers or the older CD version. ATI MMC 8.x will not install on the 128 Pro card, unless you use the ATI hack method also discussed in that thread. |
Sounds like he has the original "All-in-Wonder Radeon" that came out in 2000. Its an AGP card with the Rage Theater chip on it. I think ATI later renamed the graphics chip that card came with the Radeon 7500 when they started branding everything by that name.

So should I pull the card and see what it says on it or am I safe with kpmedia and use the iso from post #4 or the 6168 1 2 3 4 from the first post #1. Then go with mmc 8.x. If it helps at all I still have everything that came with the card the original install cd is ati mmc (no version listed) ati software release 100 (180-V01036-100) replicated in canada according to the cd. Also ATI aiw demo tutorial (180-V01037-100). Plus mediator 5
(180-G01091-500) merlin VR high speed Real Time 3D (180-G3D036-300) and Ulaed Video Studio (180-G01080-500). Which is obviously bundled useless software but just saying if anybody has an interest in any of them they are available. -- merged -- So upon the advice of kpmedia I download the 6168 1 2 3 4 and (optional)5 plus MMC 8.7. I went to do the install and #1 installed just fine reboot and went to install #2 and got the error message INF file not found. Hit OK and I get install did not complete try setting adapter to standard VGA. So I went in to the adapter and disabled the microsoft ATI 7200 AGP driver. Then tried the #2 install again and got the same results. Where is this INF file that it needs to find. Any help would be appreciated. -- merged -- I should add I did not even know that it had the microsoft ATI drivers installed. I told the guy that built the machine to install the card with generic drivers and I would do the ATI install. I think he may have went to microsoft and did an auto detect or something. Do I need to uninstall those and how or should I just run with them and install MMC 8.7? |
Which card is it? Deciding that is the first step. Do you see any "Rage Theatre" chips on the card? Look carefully.

Lordsmurf, I pulled the card and yes it is a rage theatre card, one of the main chips states on it Rage theatre with some numbers and made in tiawan.
So any advice on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated do I want to uninstall then reinstall. I just want to make sure I do this properly as I have worked with computers for awhile, and I realize that the proper drivers can really enhance and hinder both the card, peripheral, and the system itself. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. |
Okay, that's NOT a non-Pro 128 card. That's good. :thumb:
The difference between the 128 Pro and the 7200 ATI AIW Radeon is most easily seen by the big white ATI logo stamped on the card. Post a picture of the logo, if you can. Then I'll know exactly which card it is. (I have photos of these cards, too, but I don't know where they are at the moment. My photo drive is a disorganized mess right now.) |

That's definitely NOT the 128 Pro. The logo is too new, and the copyright date was 1999 on the older 128 pro cards. The copyright of 2000 was on the first "All In Wonder Radeon" PCI and AGP cards (aka 7200 card). Note that this is the R&D date, not the release date that was about a year later.
I would install the graphics driver from the CD ISO image in this post. (Mount the image with the freeware MagicDisc. Don't waste a CD-R.) I would then proceed to install these files:
The other option is to fully install the CD drivers, and then upgrade ATI MMC to v8.7 (because 7.7 is lousy). But I'd only do it if the above fails. |
Lordsmurf, First off thank you for the reply I have already downloaded everything you suggested on the advice of kpmedia. Here is my question if you scroll back on the thread to post # 5. I already have drivers that I think were inadvertently installed. Do I want to try and uninstall these drivers and any errant files or will the cd iso image you reference overwrite them?

Uninstall and try again. Sometimes it fails the first time. (Not sure why it happens. There's no obvious logical reason.)

I downloaded the iso you suggested did the uninstall and then installed the iso from this site no prblems there. Then I went to install the 6168 package #1 installed just fine rebooted and went to install #2 and I get INF error video driver not found. Hit OK and I get "setup was unable to complete the installation try to setup your display adapter with a standard vga driver before running setup". I then tried redownloading the 6168 #2 rar file unarchived and tried again with the same results. Now I am stumped, it doesnt even give me a name for the .Inf file just inf file not found. |
Just install the CD ISO version -or- the 6168 version. Not both. If the CD ISO works, use it.
Then only upgrade ATI MMC to 8.7. For some reason, it's asking for the graphics driver (non-video function of card) when attempting to install v6168 drivers. You can always install the graphics driver from the Windows XP setup CD or Windows Update, if you want to use 6168 edition. Honestly, it doesn't matter which drivers you use -- the ATI MMC version is what's important. The drivers just need to exist and function. |
Sounds good I wont get a chance to try for a couple days. If I am not back for more answers consider it no gnews is good gnews. Thanks for everyones help at least I know what card I actually have now, and have a good iso cd if I want to move to a new machine in the future.
