Best denoise filter to use for Video8 transfer?
 

I have about 40 Video8 tapes that I need to transfer to DVD and would like to find a good filter to use in virtualDub to denoise. I have transferred tapes before but have never used any filters so have no idea about what would work best. For info, my workflow is as follows:

Playback via Sony CCD-TRV78E > Capture via Canopus ADVC110 > Capture to AVI with WinDV > Denoise in Virtual Dub > Encode to DVD via TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works 5

What kind of noise? Can you give us a short, unprocessed few seconds of sample? If you don't know how to do this with VirtualDub, let us know. Otherwise, one can only be very general:

temporalsmoother (Virtualdub built-in filter)

Many image problems like noisy interlace, compression artifacts, etc., that result from capturing analog source to DV-AVI can't be fixed without degrading the image. More are listed here http://rationalqm.us/mine.html#virtualdub and here http://www.infognition.com/videoenhancer/filters.html.Your best bet is to try to learn some basic Avisynth if VHS-to-DV is the only way you can capture the source.

I don't suggest NeatVideo. It's too aggressive, even on the milder settings. You quickly get "plastic-y" video.
CCD is ideal for chroma noise.
There are several denoisers, both temporally (interframe) and static (intraframe).
But without seeing a sample, I won't even hazard a guess. Video varies far too much for it.

Avisynth may also be a wise move. Again, it depends on the video errors.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry for not posting a sample yet. I have been waiting for a new power supply for my camera. I have recorded a sample but just realised that the video 8 tape I used was the only one out of the 40 that was recorded in long play so it's probably not the best to use as a sample. I will record from another tape but I will be away for work for a few days. Will post a sample on the weekend.

On a video like this, the noise is more grain-like than noise-like. I'd be very hesitant to remove more than a limited amount.

- Perhaps a 2-frame radius on a temporal NR in VirtualDub (Temporal Smoother filter).
- Then mask the overscan.

Is it normal that the video has like transparent vertical lines through it which makes the edges jagged? What causes this?

Do you mean interlacing?

Yes that's it. Thanks. So basically this won't be a problem once the video is encoded and played on something that handles interlaced footage (i.e. DVD player)
