Since the name of the value is FMAudioGain, it's entirely possible that this can only alter the unused "Tuner Audio" referenced elsewhere in the INF. Obviously the VC500 has no tuner; the text regarding it in the INF is probably copied directly from the reference Conexant drivers. There may be no option to alter the line in audio.

Well, that's a bummer. I have to say, in my own experience with the VC500 since I go one, and with dozens of tapes and two PCs, I never had an audio volume problem not even over the years with my AIW cards and tapes. That's an unusual output level..

It's possible to cut the audio output in half by using an audio splitter cabkle or Y-adapter and connecting only one leg of the output. that would cut audio strength along each leg of the split cables by -3db, or by half. Something like this:

You wouldn't want to do this with an amplifier because an amp's output is the wrong impedance. Only an amp/reciever with a variable line output such as a Record Out line output would be able to handle it. You could use the sound card's line input as the source and control it with the sound card's mixer but then you don't have the VC500's builtin audio sync.

To my ear, it's not really that bad. But both virtualdub and Audacity registers a LOT of warnings... Maybe it's the game itself that outputs audio like that and not the fault of the VC500 USB?

Maybe the FMAudioGain won't help, as msgohan suggested. Because I tried A-F as well as 9 as an input value, without any effect unfortunately... And the FMAudioGain appears in many places actually. In all three Control Sets and in multiple subkeys in each.

Maybe I need to uninstall some of the drivers? One of them seems to be the newer driver for the VC500 USB that I initially used (7.0.127.71), but had to be replaced with an older version (6.0.113.0) in order to get it to work with Virtualdub. Seems like I didn't completely remove the first one. Could this version 7 be causing the problem, and how would I go about removing that driver?

Hm. I don't get that same graph display in Audacity. But it's still pretty loud and strident.

You can see the results of some clipping in the modified graph, but it sounds much more tolerable. That's a new one on me, never encountered a tape that loud.

Apparently Diamond's uninstaller didn't remove all registry references (no surprise, happens often. You might try the uninstaller again, but I don\'t think it will make any difference.,

Something is not right with your audio. My version of VC500 has channels swapped. I.e. the red cable is the left channel and the white is the right channel. It also introduces a bit of the noise even if there\'s no audio connected.

All I did with the posted audio was copy it into Audacity and lower the volume. I didn\'t use cables or make any other changes. To which version of that .wav do you refer?

Red=right channel. Always.

Audio levels are completely normal on all tapes I\'ve tested. It must have been the N64 game that output sound at such a high level for some reason...
