KVCD: How do I get Rid of Black Borders?

Hi all

I am encoding but my final output is producing black borders. I have a 28" (16:9) widescreen tv, but in tmpegenc when i set output to 16:9 it still gives me black borders. Is there something in my script i should be putting?

It probably has something to do with your origional content's aspect ratio. If your burning a 4:3 movie to a 16:9 resolution the quality is gonna be horrible, so try to avoid this situation. But if you wanna take it from a higher aspect to a lower one you can open tmpenc and goto settings->advanced and dbl click on the "clip frame" option, if you see the black borders in here resize the image until they go away, make sure you have the "Resized image is used to display preview" turned off. Then you can goto the arrange settings page and select "full screen". That should get rid of the black borders. I've found that if your doing this from a HQ source and going down in ratio aka 16:9 dvd to 4:3 vcd things go well, but if you try to take a LQ source and do the same, it usually gives horrible quality. aka 16:9 DIVx to 4:3 VCD = ugly. I generally do this in my avisynth script, aka clip(X1,Y1, -X2, -Y2) then run it through grip filters and everything comes out okay.

I only do dvdrips

sources of these are always 16:9, so having a 16:9 tv you would think i should choose to full screen it

You gotta be careful with "16:9" because there are two common types.

"True" 16:9 and anamorphic 16:9 which is actually 2.35:1, so I'd bet if you looked on the back of your dvd it'll say something like either "anamorphic 16:9" or "16:9 2:35:1" I'm not sure on the best way to convert these, but if you can go into the clip settings that I was talking about before and cut out the black area, then use tmpgenc to resize it. I would try Full Screen, Full Screen (Keep aspect), and Full Screen (No Margin) see what you like best. I think with the 2:35:1 video you can use the no margin setting and it won't look very distorted.
