I don't think there's been a "big" player at this year's World Cup... the big name going in was Zidane for France, but he was hurt just before the start of the World Cup and only played in their last game in the first round.
David Beckham received a lot of attention for England, and there are the "Three Rs" from Brazil, Klose from Germany is a great goal scorer, Ahn for South Korea is getting attention, and there are a few player from Turkey that have been playing well. What does it all mean? Maybe the field is a little more level these days, and there are a lot of great players, but no one person is above everyone else.
I've been enjoying the heck out of the games - luckily I have ESPN/ESPN2 and timed recording with PowerVCRII.
