vfdct=3 (mmx) is the only one that works with the notch matrix.
And vfdct doesn't work with *bias negative values.

*bias negative values lower frame quantizers.
Reducing ibias decreases quality,...

It didn't improve, I was doing crap :?

But using vfdct=1:pbias=-256:ibias=144 I get similar size and quality to the notch matrix, without using the Notch matrix. :!:

And I could lower ibias...

I found a way to lower the quantizers on high-bitrates:

vfdct=1:ibias=-256:pbias=-256

you can replace vfdct=1 with 2 or 6, just not 3 (mmx) because it can't handle negative *bias values.

But...

I know that for ages

But I'd like a program to do it itself, just like AutoGK does now (and I helped len0x with hybrid Decomb thresholding).
And just like the algorithm i suggested in...

But I don't see why loosing quality in the process. A telecined video can be easily identified (just scan throught the frames and if there's a 3progressive 2interlaced) pattern and it will give you a...

libavcodec has gained MPEG-2 encoding only in the latest versions, it has been mainly used for MPEG-4 encoding.

They probably don't know enough about VBV to implement minrate properly :?

You're right. But then again I want to do a generic encoding script that doesn't need to care about hybrid movies, 30 fps video or 24 fps film  So I have to do it like this.

What's strange is that if Michael is right, then there is no such thing as minrate in any DVD-compliant encoder. So how does CCE work? And TMPGEnc?

Could it be a muxing problem you had? :?

If you can't use the encoder's minrate setting then you'll have to prevent "no-motion" situations that would generate bitrates lower than 150 Kbps.

Now imagine you get a stream with a dark stalled...

IMHO softpulldown+detc or pulldown.exe+detc should use -ofps 23.976, but softpulldown alone should use -ofps 29.97 fps.

softpulldown isn't capable of creating MPEG-2 RFF flags like pulldown.exe...

Then you'd better take a look at -vf noise.
Constant noise may be the answer to keep a bitrate over 150 Kbps.
