MOST likely: belts that turned into mush! You can see one on the right side just opening the cover. Getting to the bigger one...

With such a potentially tiny head etc if be cautious about using plain ferric audio stock as I think that may cause a lot of clogging, let alone the formulation most likely being wrong for this...
