A friend of mine has a problem with NTSC Movies.
He encoded many DivX Movies for DVD in Half D1 in 23,97 FPS.

Now DVDLab will encode these movies into 29,97 FPS. In 23,97 FPS all Movies will fit on one DVD+R. The "RAW" Data has 4,200 GB.

DVDLab tells him it will be 4,8 GB. I did nearly the same size in PAL (4,122 GB RAW DATA) and this will be 4,688 GB in DVDLab.

So my question: Is there a trick to add 23,97 FPS encoded movies to the DVD or must he forget it all?

Can somebody help me/him in this case?

I read everywhere 'pulldown'. I do PAL, so I don't need it. Can somebody explain me that? NTSC is so stupied!!! think I... 23,97 and 29,97 FPS...why?

PAL is simple: 25 FPS... and that is it...

THX in advance

Phil

Avalon,

I already answered this to you in the PM you sent me, but I think it is worth repeating here because this topic can be a little confusing.

Movies are always shot in 23,976 fps.

To encode a movie in PAL, you just speed up to 25 fps and also speed up the sound. The movie gets 4% smaller, the pitch of the sound gets a little faster, but it's hardly noticiable.

To encode a movie in NTSC, you can't speed up to 29,97 fps, because that you make the movie very jerky. In this case there is a complicated process that makes 5 interlaced frames from 4 progressive frames, producing a 29,97 interlaced stream. DVD Players can do this process on the fly, if you enable the pulldown flag. To do that:

pulldown.exe my_movie.mpv my_movie_pull.mpv

And then you add my_movie_pull.mpv to you authoring program. This is only needed if you are using CCE, Tmpgenc has a bult-in option to do that. In fact CCE also does have, but I never tested.

NTSC isn't that stupit you only have to know how to handle it.

If you got a DVD Stand alone which plays back NTSC on a PAL Tv (most DVD Players sold in PAL Regions are able to do this) you don't have to convert 23,97 Streams into 25 FPS.

Just add a "pulldown-flag" when encoding with TMPEGEnc. But by doing this you have to encode using MPEG2 because this MPEG mode supports the pulldown option.

Here I answered already a Posting containing a little "how to" and also a "because why ... we don't convert to 29,97!!"

@Avalon

That's ok, I just thought that it would be a good idea to also answer here to share the knowledge with everyone. About my guides, nothing new yet, I am really out of time, the university is really taking over all my time!
I'll let you know as soon as I update something.
