Just curious. I usually use 4x, but sometimes 8x. I wonder if I really have to burn this slow. Anyone else burn higher without problems?

Is there any advantage to Alcohol 120% over nero for bin/cue burning? I have both but use Nero

Personally, I always burn my KVCDs @ 8x (on a 48x Lite-0n burner), even though the media I use is rated @ 48x and is of a high quality (Fuji--Taiyo Yuden). I normally overburn up to ~823MB per disc (any higher leads to errors for me), and literally have never had a problem with any disc when sticking to these limits. On the other hand, I have noticed a few errors (video and/or audio glitches) when burning at speeds higher than 8x on my particular burner (even when not overburning). When overburning, it's often recommended to stick to a slow speed like 8x or less to minimize the likelihood of errors (it has to do with burning to a part of the disc that really wasn't meant to be burned, and an increase in the amount of wobbling that occurs at the extreme outer edge of a disc).

But every burner supposedly has a "sweet spot" (burning speed) that will result in the least amount of errors. If you look at a place like cdrlabs.com or cdrinfo.com (I'm sure there are others too) you can find some tests that show error-levels obtained by burning at different speeds with different media on different burners.

Some people say you should always burn at the highest speed that your burner supports, because that is the speed at which the burner is supposedly calibrated to perform the best (I can't agree...I've made far more coasters burning at 48x than 8x ). Others say that burning at slow speeds is generally "safer" (this, I can believe). All I know is what works consistently for me with my chosen media on my overburned KVCDs. I tend to stick with what I know works every time. The best thing you could do is probably do some burn-testing at different speeds and see if you come across any errors/glitches throughout the duration of the movie.

If you're the kind of person who sticks to 1 brand of media, and burning at 32x or 48x works fine for you several times on that particular media with no errors, then I guess you could feel confident in burning at that speed (just be careful to do some more testing if you switch media brands). Also, keep in mind that sometimes different factories/companies are hired to manufacture discs for another company who then puts their name on it, so you've got to know what you're actually dealing with....for example, some (mainly older) Fuji brand discs are/were manufactured by CMC Magnetics, which tend to be poor quality, while other Fuji discs are made by Taiyo-Yuden, which are highly regarded. So there's a few different factors to consider in the equation.

Cheers,
-d&c

I personally think Alcohol 120 % is a better burner for bin/cue than Nero, but I have never had problem with either for burning bin/cue. I have 3 different versions of Nero, only one installed Nero 6. As for advantages I dont think there really is any, just personal prefrence. Of course alcohol can do more than just burn bin/cue, just take a look at www. afterdawn .com at the cd-r section.
I personally only use fuji disc's(Taiyo-Yuden) for movies and such, for music any cheap brand will do

For data, I use my 48X CDRW.

For Video, I use my 2X DVD Writer.

Since getting the DVD writer, I have forgotten all about (S)VCDs. Full-D1 or Half-D1 on a DVD-R means 2 hours or 4 hours of excellent quality.

give the media to nero and burn at 4x cos the
hard part is gone, burn is the easy part,no need hurry.

take the alcohol and drink while you waiting the result!

@ Jore..

Nice Avator hehe.

As to burning speed...
Depending upong which Media brand I'm using, I'll use it's Max, set by
Nero in "Auto" mode, or I'll "Manually" set it to CDR speed, OR, if and when
I expeirence issue w/ final CDR burn; movie quality; or other; I'll set it
to a lower speed, usually down 1x lower or I'll set to 8x altogether. I have
found that on MY burner (CDRW) I experience various kinds of issues, but
I think its more related to the Media brand that I've purchased. I.E., I
purchased a spindle of Memorex CDRWs at 4x burn speed, but guess what,
none of them work. I thought they had to be re-formated, but that doesn't
work either. They are completely uselss. Anyways, then I bought another
spindle a few months later.. and would you know it, AGAIN that same brand
does not work. rAtTs !!

That's the way I called it,

I've tried Fuji, Imation, TDK, and Memorex. and memorex is by far the worst. I"ve burned at least 50 each of each brand and the memorex produced tons of coasters. I used to think it was my computer, but now I know it's the media that stinks.

As in Video (VCD or SVCD) burning mode there is no bit used for error correction (that where go the 100MB diff between DATA mode and VIDEO mode), you must burn at a very low speed.

When you burn a data CD a more than 16x, you can be sure that it has a LOT of errors.. but they are all corrected by the error correction algorythm and you never see them.

I have consistently burned my KVCDs at 48x on my "hacked" Liteon drive. It was originally a 40x and I upgraded it to 48x via a firmware update.

In many cases I am able to burn at 40x or 48x on media that is not rated that high. I have had issues with extreme overburn (i.e. 830 MB+) but when sticking to 805-815 MB I have not had any trouble.

Both of my primary DVD players are Sony 5-disc changers. I have also used the KVCDs on cheap Shinsonic and a single disc Sony.

Now I am burning DVDs and I am stuck at 1x DVD+/-RW and 2x DVD+/-R because my 4x DVD burner is not as forgiving of cheap media. Once I spring for the good stuff I will burn at top speed if possible.

Wow, is it LiteOn 40x12x48? If so - I have the same drive! What the way to "hack" it?

4x, 8x, 24x, 48x.....isnt that all manufacturers hullabaloo?

I burn a 4x because thats as fast as my Ricoh goes. One of my freinds burns at 40x, because "his system is so much better".

I burned Carlitos way in about 8 minutes, he did it in 10.

Any comments?

really? 1x speed burner burn whole disc at 74 minutes. 74/4 = 18.5 minutes (theoretically) to burn whole (74 minutes) disc.

It's better to burn a low speed (4x - 8x) !!

You know why? Try it yourself, burn a kvcd at 4x and one at high speed (32x - 48x) and do the Nero cdspeed test.

When burned at lower speed, the overall performance is far better (in my experience anyways)

And, just as Dialhot suggested, there is no error protection in vcd's...!

My writer only burns at 1x or 2x

1x takes about an hour to burn a full 4.38 GB DVD

2x takes about half an hour to burn a full 4.38 GB DVD

Nero automatically adjusts the spped.

If I am editing/encoding video, it sets it to 1X speed.

Right now I am downloading from a friend's FTP site, chatting online, encoding a 2 hour video, will take 2.5 hours to encode it to Half-D1 format. And burning a DVD at 1X, all at the same time.

I love my new Pentium 4 2.6GHz machine.
It is the only way to go if you want to be productive.
