Has anyone had success working with iMovie? I don't mean pulling in 5 minute clips and making a 10 minute movie.

I want to know about TV episodes, captured, commercials clipped, even editing DivX... I can't get it to do a blinking thing... Everything *real* (i.e. not Beach.mov) gives me a "could not import (-40)" error, after somewhere around 2 hours of import time.

I have OS X 10.3.2, iMovie 3 (4 is in the mail), 1 GHz eMac and 768 MB RAM.

Allow me to answer your question, Mr. BoxOfSnoo, for posterity.

iMovie is a DV editing application *only*. It may seem like you can import other formats, but it uses Quicktime behind the scenes to convert to DV. DV is very large, and the maximum size for any individual clip is 2 GB, about 9 minutes.

If you want to import a big MPEG file, chop it with mpgtxwrap or MPEGinsu. MPEGinsu is also great for editing out commercials.
