Let me tell you what is to be pissed off :

I installed win2003 Server on my PC this we. I couldn't use my regular firewall (Kerio) as it wasn't for server, the same for my antivirus (Panda). So I went to the net to DL a server version of Kerio (called Kerio Winroute) and never have the time.

15 MINUTES after being connected to the net my computer was definitely corrupted by MS.Blast !

Fortunally I had a Ghost image of a proper install and didn't loose 1 hour to reintall it all.

win2003 server is secured they said ?

Hi vhelp,

Get SmoothWall, and install it on one of your PCs. This will be your Router/Gateway, and NOBODY can get in your network.

Same here. One of my friends had the same issue when preparing a customer's pc. He was 2 min. online to download the Windows Update and was infected before the patch was installed...

Hello my friends

Yes, I know how you all feel. I just hate being pested by bugs; worms; trojans
and really bad cookies.

I'm w/ Dialhot and others here. Ghost your pc (using a fresh and stable OS install)
and this is what I'm planning on doing. And, the next time I feel something is
funny, or I just wanna be sure, I can pop in my fresh Ghost image and be
very

@ krassi my friend,

I'm confused ...

You saying that someone got to HIS port before he could (or you could)
install a firewall

A firewall is a must in everyones pc internet surfing ... a must !!
And, it doesn't matter if you're on 56k dialup eaither (some of us, like my
self, can't afford DSL/Cable) but these buggers still plague us all !!!
.
.
But, but what I really want of an virus checker that is FREEWARE and does
not give me any problems - - I need one bad.
I also don't want a virus checker, if it's gonna just steal my prescious cpu %

I have Sygate's peronal firewall. I think it's pretty great, for a freeware..
and no naging, except for when you first boot, it asks you to register... I can
leave with that for the time being

Well, so far, I have not seen any RED lights/alerts on my firewall. It's ben
nothing but gray/green since yesterday..

@ kvcd,

Yes, I will give your suggestion a looksees.

Thanks everyone for the frendly helping hands/suggestions, very appreciated

Hi vhelp!
Yep, he downloaded the firewall app but the worm was quicker
He thought he would be fast enough to dowload the patch from Windows Update and a firewall before the "blast".
That was during the high occurance of the blast virus.
I have checked my different firewalls during this time and the logs showed that there where ~0.8 requests per second on that security hole on a productive server

EDIT: I have just seen that you are not using or don't want to use a virus scanner. You're right that it will steal cpu time, but it's really a basic thing. I can tell you as i'm also a script programmer in different server pages applications and the result without a scanner are some major vulnerabilities. It's really simple to do that, even with the latest Windows Updates and a firewall you can't block some script kiddies
And even non-hacking sites started to implement some of those features

Well, what I'd like is a simple virus scanner that I can turn on and off at will,
at any time, when I need the CPU cycles. For instance, if I'm reading a kvcd
forum page, I don't need to have my virus scanner on, if I'm not surfing
anywhere's else that a web page would have a script waiting for me to open
by viewing the page. If I'm on kvcd page, no need to have on at that moment
But, if I knew I was about to go elsewhere's, THEN I could turn back on the
virus scanner
See what I mean ??

I don't mind D/L'ing the latest and greaters "definitions" as long as it's quick
and easy. But, I don't want to have to D/L whole virus scanner apps. Just
the definitions.

Another good reason to find a virus scanner w/ on/off switch, is for when
I'm debuggin MEn encodes. They are slow w/ scanner on. But, if I could
turn off, they would go fast. No need to worry about script, if I'm not on
a page that has one

Any good recommends of such a scanner ??
last one I used (and expired after 20 days) was AVG 6.0 (was good, but really
kicked my CPU cycles butt, and I didn't see any on/off, and it' was trial)

Thanks again for any input/suggestions peoples,

vhelp,

AVG has a free version, and it defaults to run automatically at 3:00AM.
You can change the time, of course. And you can also stop it any time you want.
That's what I use.

Hi vhelp,
You could always give www.free-av.com a go.
It's free for personal use.
I'm trying it for a couple of days now.
No problems till now.
Cheers

To amplify my previous post about Thunderbird, I am SO please with Thunderbird (E-Mail Client)
I was using a program called "MailWasher" to stop the spam, but every day, I always got spam messages that I had to add to the list manually. This was getting tired.
So day before yesterday, I installed Thunderbird, and imported all my Outlook Express address book and all sent and received E-Mails.
Yesterday, I "trained" the client, by clicking on the "adaptive junk mail detection", and then I selected spam messages, and that was it
This morning, when I checked my E-Mail, I was surprised tha I only had about 10 E-Mails, responses to posts from the forum, and on my main E-Mail address, there were no messages.
I thought, well, something must be wrong. So I looked at the E-Mail client's "Junk" folder, and WOW , there were 153 messages in my "kvcd" account, and 43 messages in the junk folder of my normal account.
What can I say This program is just awesome

They've got a few other non-freeware apps as well. I'm trying this one out
for Malware, trojans etc...

... aČ is able to recognize more than 19.000 different malware programs (trojans, backdoors, hacktools, batch viruses and trojans, internet worms, irc worms, java scripts, webserver scripts, vbs scripts, virus construction kits, denial of service tools (DoS), distributed denial of service tools (DDoS), flooder, keylogger, nuker, sniffer and unix viruses).
