G'day WhiteKnight54
Dvd2svcd is a great all in one application, if you havent used it before it can be a little confusing with all the options it provides but it certainly does a good job. Doom9 has a very good guide here and is also the home of the Dvd2svcd forum. Spend some time reading the faq and searching the forum before you post any questions there as the replys can be a little toxic if it is alreafy covered in the faq(if you know what I mean). There is also some excellent info in posts on this forum that will help you to set it up to use the kvcd templates.

Dvd2svcd can handle avi files as well and you can specify the file size you want ie: 800 mb 650 mb etc, as I said you will need to do a little light reading but it will be worth it in the end.

As for the 1 GB file from virtual dub (I assume you are frame serving from vdub) if you use fitcd to create an avs script you can use the file size prediction to get perfect size files every time check Q9 here http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=68 on how to use it.
