Kwag,

Just ran MIBII through the Predictor for one 80 CD, KVCD3 (MPEG-1) picture came out great, sound great. One minor problem. I played this back on a Panasonic RV32, Sony 61" TV...PERFECT all the way around. Played the same disk on a Pioneer DV343, JVC 36", picture filled up only the left side of the screen. Some of the CD test I have made with the KVCD3 MPEG2 templates will not play at all on my Panasoic E20, the movie starts, then just staggers, stops, staggers, picture is great, sound is great. So what happen on the Pioneer vs the Panasonic RV32 and the MPEG-2 on the Panasonic E20?
Thanks in advance..........Used the Predictor on all the files........

Bud

Hi Bud,

The Pioneer DV343 behaves very strangely with resolutions above 352x240. At 352x480 it will display onle half left of the screen , but I think that if you encode to MPEG-2, then it will diplay correctly. At least that's what I recall from that model. As for the Panasonic models, my DMR-E20 does the same as your on MPEG-2. It will play every resolution, but only MPEG-1. I believe it will even play MPEG-1s burned as SVCD, if I remember correctly

I have the Panasonic CV52, which is basically the same as the RV32 except it is a 5-disc model. It plays all templates perfectly up to a maximum bit rate of 2500. I made brief experiments with MPEG-2 and hacked header when I first got the unit but had little success, and since MPEG-1 is better for lower bit rates anyway there's no real incentive to try it again.

I have
Below ~2Mbps, MPEG-1 sweeps MPEG-2 . Above that, MPEG-2 scales better. That's my opinion from 1,000,000,000,000 tests I've done , but others may disagree

Edit: ~2.5Mbps

yeah, but from my tests, even up to 2500 mpeg1 is much, much better than mpeg2.

really tho, is it discernable? because since mpeg2's compatibility is i sure fire, it may be the best road.

i dunno...

my tests are coming out quite similar. it seems mpeg2 is handling backgrounds a bit better. it also allows me to bump up the CQ around 8%.

maybe i am blind, but im liking MPEG2 now. i also like the fact that it resizes in full screen correctly. so now, when i take a video to my buddys house (whos dvd player wont play my discs) we can watch it straight from the cd and video out that sucker from his laptop. quite a deciding perk.

when encoding, am i making an MPEG-2 Prgram (VBR) or am MPEG-2 Super VideoCD (VBR)? or does it matter?

You should make MPEG-2 Super VideoCD (VBR). It does matter

I have a pioneer 343 and you don't have to re-encode as mpeg 2...you can just burn the mpeg 1 file you already have as an SVCD and the 343 will play it correctly. The only mpeg resolution the pioneer 343 will play correctly is 352x240 and 704x480, for all the other resolutions you need to burn as an SVCD (but you can still encode as mpeg 1).

Does that mean it will play MPEG-1 as 352x480 if burned as SVCD
I still have a Pioneer 343 somewhere in the closet

G'day all
I have similar experiences with a pioneer dv344 will play mpeg1 burned as svcd but with animation I get a lot of shimmering. I breifly flirted with burning mpeg1 as svcd when I got audio break up at low min birtrates burning as svcd fixed this and so did raising the min bitrate to 750, I have been meaning to test the different templates/resolutions in mpeg1 maybe now would be a good time, I'll report my results.

Kwag, yes it will play the 352x480 resolution if burned as an SVCD (it supports CVD mpeg 2). I did that when I first started playing around with KVCDs. =)
