KDVD Templates can use Dolby Digital??

Hi kwag!

Is it possible to get Dolby Digital Sound with your KDVD Templates? If yes, how?

I'd also like to know, what settings I can change in the KDVD Template, so that it's still DVD compliant, (since this seems to be necessary

...)...

Can I lower the audio bitrate? does the GOP have to be closed?
What about "Output YUV Data as basic blah blah..."... ?

You need to mux your created KDVD video file with the original AC3 from your source (DVD?) You can then mux the streams with BBMpeg. However, I'm not sure what DVD authoring package will read that

KDVD IS already DVD compliant

The mpeg files that come out of KDVD templates are read by standard DVD authoring packages as compliant DVD files. I have personally tried them on ULEAD's DVD WorkShop and DVDit.

I know that they're DVD compliant...

What I was asking was : Are they still DVD compliant when I lower the Audio Bitrate from 192 to 128 kb for example or when I change the downmix type from stereo to dual channel... Is the closed GOP necessary? and so on...

As for Dolby Digital: Ok I don't wanna mux them with the original AC3 file from the DVD because that would take up too much space I guess... Now when I encode the audio with Headache as a "dual channel" MP2, would the dolby information still be preserved? what I mean is, would my receiver still play the deep tones through the subwoofer, the tones from the right, through the right speaker and so on...

It depends on the psy-model you're using. Select Dolby 2-channel in headache so that psy-model 2 is chosen and that will give you a simulation of dolby surround. And yes, select dual-channel. I don't think it makes any difference for your player if you do that.

Yes and no. If you downmix the audio from 6- to 2-channels, of course it's not going to sound as good. The original audio had a track for every speaker, and now you're trying to squeeze all that information into two tracks.

I'm in two minds about what would be the best approach, not just for you but for everyone. Some say to demux the 5.1 AC3 and downmix with Dolby Surround encoding. Others say demux the 2-channel AC3 (if there is one on the disc) and use that instead, since it's already been mastered in Dolby Surround by audio engineers.

Some days I'm inclined towards the latter, and others the former. One day I need to sit down and rip both versions and do a comparison

If it's a decent receiver you should be able to tell it to pipe bass from all channels through to the subwoofer, so you'll still get your deep booms and rumbles. If it's Pro Logic II it'll do a pretty decent job of simulating 5.1 (enough to fool listening visitors, probably), but it won't be the same as a good DVD

Edit: Also don't downsample to 44.1khz unless (IMO) you're going to drop the bitrate below 112. That makes a big difference in audio quality, which you can of course test for yourself

ok, so it would still be DVD compliant if I use a bitrate of 160kb for the audio (which I think is perfectly enough...) ?

Another option is to demux the 2-channel AC3 and simply remux that with your video. It's usually a lot smaller than the 5.1 version, and is much better quality than reencoding with MP2.
