Slow Encoding - is this the Norm?

Ok so I tried the new optimal script on a full movie (Die Another Day), and I must admit after my comments in "my two cents" I feel differently now.

Just a question, it took 13hours30min at 528x576 Cq77. Is this about right?The movie is about 2hours8min long.
I`m still using avisynth 2.08, and my system is Thunderbird Amd 1,13Ghz.

Hi vdermerwedz,

Yes, that's about right.
Why don't you try installing AviSynth 2.52
Your encoding should then be ~30% faster.

Hi,i only have a celeron 900 and with that resolution it takes me about 12-14hours(man i need to get a faster computer),so i would say that is normal for the speed of your computer

Just for comparison, I just finished encoding the director's cut of Aliens (154 minutes) with the "then current" 2.52 script. I just added telecide and decimate. Took 11 1/2 hours at 720 x 480 using TMPGEnc, CQ72, at "high quality" setting. This is on a P4 1.6@ 2.133 and a pristine Win XP Pro partition. Awesome results!!! I could even sweat that it's better visual quality than the original ReplayTV file I used.

I just did Die another Day and it took me 2 hours and 40 mins at CQ 63 with the current script, I'm using a celeron 2.0ghz with windows xp.

What format does ReplayTV record? I'm sure it's MPEG-2 , but what are the specs
Also, do you need a satellite subscription to be able to record I'm asking because I'd like to know if I could use that machine to record from external sources (like my own 4DTV Receiver, VHS, etc. ) instead of their satellite transmission.

Anyways..

@ vdermerwedz and others..
If you are encoding from a Network setting, you could also increase the
speed dramatically by keeping the .AVI or .D2V files on the same drive
and encoding it.

Unfortunately, I capture to my 2nd pc (which is Networked to my MAIN pc)
and since I do most of my encoding on my MAIN pc, it's pretty slow.

Another slow down cause...
Is when you do lots of color conversions in your scripts.
With the exception of DVD rips, the biggest problem to encoding speed for
concirn is with those that are "captured" sources. Know WHICH codec you
used, and TO USE, is important. I'm still working on this, to find that right
codec to use in my Analog capturing.

The fastest "files" for encoding from...
Are divX and MPEG/VOB files.. due to their compression nature, and the
ability to decompress them.. the lag time is minimal. Couple this with
having your files directly on the same drive will yield very fast encodings.

No. You do, however, need to subscribe to the ReplayTV service itself. A monthly fee or a one time lifetime fee. I don't recall what the monthly fee is. I just paid the lifetime ($250). This is independent of any input sources you wish to use. The unit has an internal modem it uses to download the channel guide information. Better yet is the built-in ethernet support that I use!!!

Yes. I have three sources input to my ReplayTV unit. DirecTV, terrestrial antenna, and VCR.

It works just like a VCR. There is no satellite transmitted directly to the unit. Hope this makes sense
