I just wanted to tell everyone thanks for all the help. In the 2 months or so that I've been here I've learned alot about how to produce spectacular KVCD 1CD encodes. BYE BYE SVCD.

I love this stuff.

SKVCD is KVCD's substitute for SVCDs
It was made for the SVCD freaks, who swear on excelent quality and on carrying 4 CDs around ( ), so they can now do the same but only in 2 ( or 1 ) CDs
And also done for compatibility issues, of course
Some players have issues with MPEG-1, but not with MPEG-2.
So SKVCD gives you a wider choice.
The resolution is set to 352x480, but can be changed to 480x480, and it will normally give twice the play time that you would get with a regular SVCD while maintaining the same ( or better ) quality.

You should definetely stick to KVCDx3 (MPEG-1) if your player supports it. As kwag said, that template is mainly for compatibility issues. The quality will still be better with KVCDx3.

As Jellygoose said, you'll get better quality with MPEG-1.
I use MPEG-2 only if I have to, such as doing KDVDs.
You also have the choice of encoding MPEG-1 and muxing as SVCD, and then burn as SVCD. This will give you better quality than the same movie encoded as MPEG-2

this using KVCDx3 MPEG-1, changing to 480x480, then muxing/burning as SVCD?

this SVCD compatible?

Yep, should be
Because every MPEG-2 decoder should read an MPEG-1 stream.
So once you make your KVCD MPEG-1, and you mux it as SVCD and burn it as SVCD, the decoder will "think" it's a standard SVCD, because of the "SVCD" structure on the disk. So 99.9% of all players will be fooled.

or i misunderstand...need recomendations,i only encode skvcds mpeg2!

and i can't loose this recomendations for use mpeg1!

Hi jorel,

You can't use pulldown on MPEG-1, and SVCD can only "supposedly " play 25fps ad 29.97fps. So for MPEG-2 encodes for SVCD, if your source is 23.976, you must encode with 3:2 pulldown. HOWEVER, you can also encode MPEG-1 at 23.976fps and mux as vcd and then burn as SVCD
I have 2 players that support SVCD, and this way, it plays fine on both. So even though I encoded at 23.976 MPEG-1, it plays fine as SVCD

I'm going to try this, as I'm confined to SVCD by one of my players.

I think you mean I can:

Telecide() and Decimate() to produce 23.976 from NTSC 29.97
Encode with TMPGEnc as KVCDx3 MPEG1 (changed to 480x480)
Mux with BBMPEG as VCD
Burn as SVCD with Nero

What max bitrate would you use in TMPGEnc? I'll use the .57 as minimum. I'm recording "Taken" from the SciFi channel and Futurama at present.

Thanks as usual

Nick

2,500Kbps is plenty

ok, i did tests!

spirit, 1000 frames with ~41 seconds (forced film)!

encoded as Mpeg2, 480x480
frame rate: 23,976 fps(internally 29,97fps)
encode mode: 3:2 pulldown when playback
CQ82
mux as svcd in bbmpeg
8.22mb (8.427kb)

encoded as MPEG1, 480x480
frame rate: 23976
CQ 82
mux as svcd in bbmpeg
9.55mb (9.782kb)

MPEG1 is too big
Mpeg1 is 1.355kb more than MPEG2 in only 1000 frames
using the same source, the same CQ,
only changing in tmpgenc to mpeg1 or mpeg2 for each encode!

then a doubt: (another)
will be better encode as MPEG1 with less CQ or
as Mpeg2 with more CQ for the same target (1 cdr)

Ok jorel,

I'm pretty sure that if you lower the CQ on your MPEG-1 encode to match the size of the MPEG-2, the MPEG-1 quality will still be better
You'll always have different file sizes between MPEG-1 and MPEG-1, with a constant (same) CQ value.

ok my friend!

in the samples that i did, mpeg1 is really better.
i'm re encoding "spirit" as skvcd mpeg1 right now!
thank you very much Kwag,....this is a tutorial for us all (members)!
the title of this thread is right:
thanks for KVCD
