Hi when doing music videos i am using 352x240,now is it still good to use cq vbr for these instead of cq.

Also since size isin't a concern I would use cq 90,but with cqVbr what would be the highest number to use without just getting bigger and not better(don't really know to much about cqVbr)

thanx

Ok here are some facts, see if it helps you...

At VCD resolution, CQ_VBR gives a sharper picture with less mosquito noise and DCT Blocks. CQ will give you a better bitrate distribution, meaning that there are less (or no) blocks in action scenes. None of these two methods is perfect, and you have to choose which one suits you best.

When there's LOTS of high action-movement in your source I'd still go for CQ instead of CQ_VBR, unless you don't mind getting bitrate peaks of ~3000kb/sec with CQ_VBR to make up for the bad bitrate allocation... (that would probably be the best method, but you'll need lots of space...)

Thanx Jellygoose

I am going to stick with cq because i am very pleased with the results at cq 90 but I just remember everyone saying that vbr is better for that resolution

Because it is ! Read again Jellygoose post. CQ is better only on high action scenes. I do not think you have such in music videos

I understood what he meant i was just saying that i'm satisfied with the cq 90.

I guess the main reason for this thread was to find out what nu mber i would use to get the best quality without just making the file bigger using VBR.

Why do you want the file to be bigger with CQ_VBR ? When we say "the picture is better" that suppose "for the same file size !".

The only thing is that CQ_VBR use a completly different scale than CQ so you hhave to make some test to see what is the CQ_VBR that gives the same file size than CQ90. By experience I can say than CQ70 is equivalent to CQ_VBR18 and CQ75 to CQ_VBR20

this answers me perfect

I will try an explain in better words what i meant just to clear it up

You can use cq 100 but it only makes the file bigger not better then if you used 90 right?
so i was asking what is the highest number while using cq vbr you could use that would lets say be =to cq 90 which you answered.

Thanx

Okay. I never Asked me that question (and I never use CQ90 ). I just do a movie in CQ mode determinated by Calcumatic, then the same in CQ_VBR (that calcumatic can handle also) and at the end I compared the results
But I understand your need as you do short videos that do not fill a complete CD.
