Hi all

I have attempted to encode to divx 5.0.2 pro via mpeg mediator and got very poor quality i don't if i have done something wrong

The movie is 139min and i used a 574bitrate for 1 cd.

I don't know if how to configure divx 5.0.2 to do cropping resize etc i just used default 720x576.

Can someone advise me?

Thanks all.

I might be wrong but I think 574 is a pretty low bitrate even for DivX, and 720x576 is too big. Try 640x576.

IMO you shouldn't do 1 CD DivX encodes of films over 90 mins, go for 2 CDs with much better quality.

Hi Adder,

PyRoMaNiA is right 574kbps is a bit too low for DivX (even the newer 5.0.5 version).

That said it all depends on how you want to view your finished encodes.

If you only view them on a 4:3 PC monitor, then I would resize and crop the image to a more suitable output image size. If your source image is 2.35:1 you will be able to crop away a fair amount of black!

However, if you intend to view your encodes on a TV screen, (which is what I do via an Xcard) all is not lost.

If you select 645kbps for the video and use 56kbps or 64kbps for the audio you can obtain quite a reasonable looking encode. You will have to do 2passes (3max) though. If you are not sure how to do this 'manually' I'll be happy to tell you.

I've encoded StarWars 1 in both the PAL (720w x 576h [131min] and NTSC 720w x 480h [136min]) versions onto 700MB CD-R's. So it can be done!

Yes i agree 574KB is Not Much for a DivX.

The minimum should be at least 900KB.

Don't use DivX 5.02, use XviD, you can get better results and predict the filesize with accuracy.

Resize and Crop your video using GKnot, you will get the values without aspect ratio error.

Buy 90Minutes Cd's if you want to use only 1CD for your movie and if you have the knowledge, burn the CD in MODE2 so you can get an 95MB extra, so 800MB to 895MB.

Hope it helps.
Sniffer.

I used to encode with DivX but when comparing it to Xvid codec (Koepis build, available from various sites live divx station) found that it performs better both on my pc and divx / xvid standalone system.

For live capture from video or dvd conversion I use xvid set at 100% quality so I can edit it, filter out logo`s etcetera, but it does work well at lower bitrates.

Another very good codec is the 3ivx one from 3ivx.com but I found that it`s encoder caused divx and xvid editing problems in virtualdub and tmpgenc so had to remove that to correct the problem.

Hope this helps a bit

I haven't read the hole thread. But I think u use CBR for encoding Divx. Use One VBR and you can put your movie in Full D-1 Resolution on one CD in good looking Quality.
My record was 131 min in good till very good quality.
Perhaps you use the MA script of kwag and use VDUB and make the quality higher.
