thanks for the link, I tryed a lot of settings, but the main issue of killing the "big blocks" is setting the vbitrate wich I didn't use.

Mencoder has a lot bether picture than tmpgenc, on the other hand mpeg2enc is even bether than mencoder but it has the same speed then...

Actualy I can't find ANY setting wich changes much to the libavcodec quality, even changing max and min bitrates...

It doesn't have to be, a 2pass with mencoder/ffmpeg is about 1,5 slower than 1 pass, since you can use dev/null as output the first pass.

You told mplayer didn't show the "hidden" subs if you didn't load ANY subs, only when you load whatever kind of sub stream, but your hardware dvd does show them even when no subs selected. (puff)...

Doesn't that depend on the movie? (motion estimation)
If everything is well a low motion movie will be less in size and a high motion one will have a bogger size, else vbr didn't make sense.

But I still keep using the mplayer line, since it uses the same commandline format as mencoder. (makes it easyer in a script)
