I rarely encode xvid to mpeg2, but I use DC precision 8 and progressive frames simply, nothing special.

I usually do 2-pass encoding to get precisely the exact size I want.

SO far everything I tried worked fine on my standalone (Pioneer DV444) except for 480x288, which didnt, it only filled 1/3 of the screen.

Didnt surprise me that such a weird resolution didnt work...

Since maestro didnt complain (not even a warning) of MPEG-1 at all the MPEG-2 resolutions (352x240/288 - 352x480/576 - 704/720x480/576) I think all players are able to play them, or at least 99%.

I've personally never managed to get the copy sub color right with ifoedit, that's why I'm always authoring with dvdmaestro as i'm used to it.

I even did 96kbps MP2 for really tight fit on cd, and it was still OK, you start to hear saturation (sp?) and metallic noise around 64kbps.
