be warned that even if ffdshow includes a mpeg1/mpeg2 decoder, they do not work very well (for not saying "not at all" :-))
Test it with an avi before concluding it doesn't work on your PC.

You can see the effect of a filter "on the fly"...
You can see the effect of a filter "on the fly" with the direct show filter ffdshow.
In the settings you have a "avisynth" section where you can put a script to test. It will be applied on the video...
