Like in the topic.

I've a problem with dropped frames. I made some samples with TMPGEnc and the same with Mencoder (Pack-Shot) and as I join both videos in VDub there are less frames in the Mencoder-Video then the TMPGEnc produced. In a 1000 frames sample I've lost ~10 frames.

What can I do or what have I done wrong?

Did you go from the vob or with a DVD2AVI project ?
If second choice, did you use the same D2V file ?

Hmm,
Phil, AFAIK the only way to encode D2V file with MEncoder is using makeAVIS. Is that what you are asking EM?
BTW I have never seen frame skipping with MEncoder.
Interesting to see we have two people reporting the same in the forum...
I guess one buffer underflow at the begining to fill the cache is ok, but I get no frame skipping at all.
All my sources are pure VOBs from DVDs.
All my MEncoder encodings are perfect so far but are only test runs.
Cheers

I exacly know it if I encode AVS Scripts with make AVIS. Then I've lost some frames. I don't know with VOB but I can test it. What do you think is my problem?

My encodes also drop frames and I use VOB-->DVD2AVI-->MakeAVIS-->
MOVIE.AVI-->FILE.AVS. I still can't out figure why

Does it affect the movie in any way? Is the audio not in sync any more or anything like that? In one of my encodings mencoder said the gop wasn't coded and skipped the frame that resulted in a really weird movie :P .
But if it doesn't change the movie there's nothing wrong.

The question is to know if a d2v project was used in each case. Why ? Because the diff between dvd2avi 1.76 and dvd2avidg is that the second one fixes a problem a frame dropped under certain circonstances.

I wanted to know if this later version was used or not. Because I'¨ still convince that this "dg" fixed version fixes nothing at all.

EM, I'm still waiting an answer, please

@Phil,
BP says he is doing his movies with dvd2avi&makeavis and also looses frames we can start with his case while EM doesn't arrive
I've done a couple of trials with dvd2avi&makeavis but I swear I did those on 5000 frames clips and I'm sure I haven't seen any messages stating that mencoder was dropping frames.
Cheers

EM doesn't have such message either. He saw the diff in the encoded video, after import under vdub.

-> the frames can be dropped by vdub

@Phil,
But then, I've been using vdubmod v1.5.10.1 for quite some time and I haven't experienced frame loss.
Think it can be a mencoder release issue?

I don't think so because only the Mencoder encoded Video have less frames and no others.

I understood ! Nevertheless the frames can be dropped by vdub BECAUSE MENCODER ENCODED THEM BADLY

Can you check the frame nu¨ber under tmpgenc for both video and see if the diff is the same ?

Will you answer to my question ? Wich version of DVD2AVI did you use please ?

EM, be a sports and let Phil and the rest of the guys know which version of D2V you are using .
Now, EM, if you're using decodefix/DVD2AVIdg, I hope you're using the correct Mpeg2Dec3.dll that comes with the package.
When you update DVD2AVIdg version you also need to update the Mpeg2Dec3.dll that lies in the plugins folder of AVISynth otherwise behaviour is completely unpredictable.
Cheers

Yes Phil, it was called DVD2AVIdg until the last release v1.3.0.
From now on the name changes so that people understand that it has plenty more features inside besides the ones that came with regular DVD2AVI.
I still use it and makeAVIS just be in synch with you guys because since MEncoder reads VOBs and has plenty of filters built-in I don't personally need it anymore.
Besides me and Don didn't get along on that Muaddib vs Ssh thread @ D9 some time ago.
Cheers

Hi BP,
Does that means when you open DVD2AVI and open the help menu and click the about, you see DVD2AVI 1.77.3 or you see DVD2AVIdg ?
BTW do you just "Save Project" or do your "Save Project as 1.76" ?
Cheers

I check help for "About DVD2AVI" to get the version. I save "Save Project"
to create .d2v. I'm considering changing from FAT32 to NTFS in Win 2K.
They say it encodes faster and doesn't drop frames. With 704x480 NTSC
mpeg-2 plus Mencoder filters I'm getting 7 fps and for pass 1 and pass 2.
The total encode takes on average 10 hours. That's close to Tmpgenc's
time with just about the same picture quality

The MAIN question should be:
Is Video and Audio out of sync when playing back on TV

Because I did encode many Streams using mencoder and NEVER took notice if some frames are less like in your case.

No matter if Captures(via avisynth Makeavis) where encoded to mpeg2 via Mencoder or VOBs or D2v's (via avisynth Makeavis) till now everything was in sync!

Right on, Inc!
I have never experienced loss of frames with mencoder.
I've done it with makeAVIS and with direct VOB feed and everything I did is in full sync.
I didn't do many full encodes but from a couple or three I could find all are well.
And the many small 25 mintues movies I did for testing are all fine too.
I wouldn't think it has anything to do with FAT32 or NTFS, BP, but you could always try that as well.
Cheers
