Quant 2 might be the sweet spot for sampling,it's generally used in compression tests with MPEG4 as the highest point of quality, q1 is used only for avoiding undersized encodes. Quant 1 generally...

IMO a low value should give a better distribution between high and low bitrate consumption as very dark scenes would consume very few bits and high-motion, bright ones would get near max bitrates....

CQ_maxbitrate 7.6 means that you run a CQ encode with quantizer 7.6 but the maximum bitrate is respected. CQ 7.6 would be exactly the same but the maximum bitrate is not respected and the resulting...

CQ_maxbitrate doesn't scale the maximum bitrate down drastically. It only comes into effect when you get a spot where the maximum bitrate would be exceeded - it simply raises the quantizer till the...

If you do a 16:9->4:3 conversion, there'll be less film pixels of course due to the black borders. However, you cannot say that the complexity will be less than in some other movie without encoding a...

I think this is included in the notion of complexity but I'm not 100% sure.[/quote]
That's correct. My determination of complexity doesn't care about aspect ratio, resolution etc. It only cares...

In my opinion, the complexity should be measured with the final settings in mind. That is, the same matrix, same bitrate boundaries, GOPs etc. That way you can ensure that there'll be a fair result...

That's one option, of course :) Funny it didn't come to my mind even if I played with HC's CQ mode some days ago.

Hum... length in minute of the sample, the fps and the filesize, that's all what Excell needs. Having the length is as easy as opening the encoded movie in a media player 8)

I use Bitrate Viewer or MPEG Stream Analyzer to get the avg bitrate. The method doesn't matter as long as you use the same way for all files that end up on the same DVD. Automatic calculating in...

Exactly, and that's why CQ_maxbitrate should be used when encoding the samples as well. In fact, the settings should be as close as possible to the actual encoding.

If CQ_maxbitrate is the mode that is being used, it's a bug. The encoder should automatically raise the quantizer if the set max bitrate is exceeded. CQ_maxbitrate should be used anyway because the...

Phil,

could you test my spreadsheet with your samples? Encode a 3% sample of each episode with SelectRangeEvery(500,15) and fill in the values. Number of frames means the total number of frames in...

That explains it, thanks.

I've ended up doing a 2-pass encode with CCE since I got frustrated with CCEFront's erratic behaviour. Until Tylo fixes it, I must stick to a regular VBR encode. In that...

But do you re-encode even when you do a DVD->DVD backup?

As Luis said, the idea is to get (almost) equal quality for each video file on the disc, and that's why I created the spreadsheet which...
