Confirm my PAL aspect ratio resize to 4:3

I have read loads on this and just need to confirm what the best method is of resizing a PAL capture of 720x576 (thats been deinterlaced) to 4:3 1440x1080, without cropping away actual footage

This is what I have come up with and hoping this is ok

1. add a resize filter and crop the sides by 8 pixels each for the overscan

2. add another resize filter and crop top and bottom etc

3.then letterbox/crop to size 704x576

4. add another size filter to letterbox to aspect ratio 4:3 which makes it 768x576

5. then another resize to 1440x1080

I don't quite understand what you are doing, but you should de-interlace first, crop in one go, then resize one time.

Thanks - it has been deinterlaced (I mentioned that in my first sentence)

Basically I'm trying to get a captured PAL 720x576 (that already been deinterlaced) to a 1440x1080 (4:3) so either stream, upload to UT etc. So you cant just go from 720x576 to 1440x1080. there's cropping to do, getting the size to 768x576 (unless you can jump to 1440x1080) and at the same time not crop any footage (except the overscans) and add a border for adding the extra pixels (rather than chop footage)

Given that:

1. You should sharpen after resizing in order to restore resolution
2. Sharpening an already sharp transition (such as between an image and a black border) oversharpens it

You should do these in the following order:

1. Resize (just once as latreche34 said)
2. Sharpen
3. Crop
4. Add black fill (as needed)

If you want to do these with as little black fill as possible, you will need to choose your crop before step 1 so you can calculate how much to resize. Remember: DAR = PAR x SAR

No, I would crop then resize if 1440x1080 is the outcome.

Are you planning to remove the head switching noise at the bottom of the frame?

So above I used a sharpen filter. Is the setting of 16 about right if I am resizing 704*576 to 1440*1080
