Yes, I used the MA script alone, just as it is currently posted, without VagueDenoiser.
I wouldn't use it with the MA script, because it would add to the time to encode, and that's just too long. If you look at the fine details, you'll see that VagueDenoiser is not that far from the MA script ( MA is still a little better ), but if you take into account all the filters that are applied in the MA script compared to the plain script with Vague, it tells you how good Vague really is

Good old Boondock Saints right kwag

good movie... Yeah well, so Vague at the very top of the MA script, before the aSharp line, would kill lots of noise already, so it might be a good option for a not so clean DVD right?

You mean that a script with ONLY Vague Denoiser is enougth ? After all these tests, all these filters tried, all those hours spent in front of the screen... the ultimate script will contain only ONE filter ?

Oh my god...

That will be cool, but only when (Encoding time VagueDenoiser <= Encoding time MA script)

Boy, this filter IS slow

Well I'm on AMD XP 1800+ here, so that might be the reason since it's not optimzed for AMDs yet. Well I just wait another 20 hours (!!!) and we'll see if the result was worth the wait!

BTW, threshold=0.8 is quite conservative, i'm surprised you lose lots of details kwag.
Could you upload the screenshots somewhere ? I'd like to view them with zoom. Or maybe there's a way to do it in the browser ?

Edited:
And thanks for the tests , that's what i need to understand and tune the filter quality-wise

Hi Lefungus
Just right click on the picture, and "Save as" any name (or the default "va-nova-ma.JPG" ).
Then open the image in Windows Paint, and zoom in

Ok, here are my results...
I think it's far too early to judge over Vague, but for me right now it's not an option yet.
I'm not very pleased with the results... I used the standard values on a rather noisy DVD and all I can say is that it did not clean the noise on this one efficiently. That's only my opinion, but I appreciate the work you're doing on this filter, and I'm sure something very good is cooking there

What threshold have you used ? For a noisy source, you could use 1.5 or 2. You should have previewed the video first, to play with the thresholds a bit, 20 hours are a long time to wait !

I know. Well I used 1.5, and maybe threshold of 2 will give me better results on that particular movie...

Well, this filter isn't magic, it has its shortcomings too. I myself don't like its speed
On your movie why does you think it failed ? Because of lack of denoising, or because it has removed too much details with noise ?

VagueDenoiser is now up too .27 http://kurosu.inforezo.org/avs/VagueDenoiser/index.html. I think this version is mainly compiled for 3dNow instructions, but there is still the SSE2. Supposable this filter is getting really fast, Kwag I think since the two months you created your MA script, I think there is a lot more filters out there that have improved a lot and also newer ones that are great, also we still need a capture script for 2.52. This probably isn’t a good time to ask since you are testing FFmpeg, administrating, and other projects, but since mpeg structure is optimized I think AVIsyths is the only way to improve speed/quality other than using different encoders.

Well that’s my news/opinion.

Version at Warpenterprises is oooold. I think it's not even 0.25. I'll contact him to see if he could update it.

Anyway, thanks to Kurosu, there's now SSE and 3Dnow asm inside, so it's expected to be faster.

And of course some new modes to play with, enjoy
