Hi Guys,

I reformated my machine yesterday and reinstalled everything as I ususally do about once a year.

Well the first movie I've done is very very washed out looking. On the TV blacks are very bright and the colors have almost no saturation or depth.

I tried CQMatic, and ToK with the latest MA script and got the same results.

I also used Tweak(Bright=-22) and it helped the colors look right, but my CQ value went from 68 to 58

At 58 my encode no longer looks good on one CD. Is there a better way or a reason for this washed out look?

I've tried PC and TV scale in DVD2AVI and got the same results.

I just tried a second movie and it is the same thing. Colors are very washed and bland. This is in virtual dub, but it looks the same on my TV. See the blacks in the picture? All colors look bad, but the blacks show it the best.

It has to be something from my resintall, but I installed AVISynth 2.5 and the ffvfw codec. Everything else is clean as far as I know. The system was just installed yesterday.

What could it be??

Well I figured it out. Thank goodness it didn't take hours, but I think this should a warning to everyone.

The only thing that was different is that I downloaded Mpeg2Dec3 from the doom9 sticky and it was version 1.09. Up until now I had been using 1.08.

Well I replaced it with 1.08 and look at the difference. Black is black and the colors are the way they should be. So for anyone reading this I think Mpeg2Dec3 1.09 has a problem so don't use it. In the release notes it mentions some changes to a Luminance function so that is probably what is screwing up.

Look at the difference.

Gee thanks for letting us know audi2honda

Edit: But I think you have to change the colorspace. Look at Samantha and Carrie's face. There are barely any details
There's too much contrast.

hey this details are really important audi2honda.

hint:
tweak encrease to much the final size
and to got the target, the CQ decrease too much.

use "levels", see this thread:

Hi Kwag, I just use the default color space from the DVD. Should I change it to something else?

Could the poor picture quality be because these are screen shots from VirtualDub?

Well I agree with kwag about the details...
Try adding

ConvertToRGB24()

To the very end of your script, and take screenshots with and without that line and compare.

Will do I'll update this thread tonight. Is this something most people do? add converttoRGB24()...since I didn't see it in the optimal script section?

Also from a technical perspective why would this conversion help?

Thanks

Here it is with ConvertToRGB()

What do you think???

What exactly does this do? what color space is it in if I don't convert?

Download this version of DVD2AVI. You should not have any issue with the latest MPEG2DEC3.
http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Decoders/DVD2AVIT3.zip

I took this off the Doom thread for the latest mpeg2dec3 1.10.

It appears many users were having problems and a lot of them were cured by the latest dvd2Avi update.

Hi all !
I just found this thread and I've have question :
Which decoder is best to use MPEG2DEC2 or MPEGDecoder_YV12 v2.03a (AviSynth 2.5 version)
Nic is giving some speedtest too . I didn't checked it yet (will do it when get home)

mpeg2dec3 65fps
mpegdecoder 81fps

mpegdecoder yuy2 62fps
mpegdec 51

Are those numbers right ???
So which decoder should we use ???
Thank's on advance
bman

I use mpeg2dec3 not for its speed, but for the feature it includes, and pricipaly post processing.

Benchmark have to be done on last versions because mpeg2dec3 changed quite a lot recently.
