Ok VideoGurus I need your help on this one,can some one tell me why every time when I try to capture from my tv card with Virtualdub I start to drop too many frames, the same happens with aviIO.

This are my PC Specifications:
1.-Sony Vaio
2.-WINXP Home
3.-P4 with 1.49 Ghz
4.-AverTV Pvr card
5.-I capture to my D drive which is 40gb

By the way I already have drefagmented the drive before the capture but the same thing happens so this is the big question:

What's wrong with my PC??

First of all, get VirtualDub "Sync": http://www-user.rhrk.uni-kl.de/~dittrich/sync/
And if your card is based on BT8x8 chipset, get the BTWinCap drivers: http://btwincap.sf.net
Try that

Hi kaos,

I wouldn't qualify myself as a "VideoGuru" by any means , but here's a few things (for what it's worth) that came to mind after reading your post:

Code:
1) Do you have any other programs running in the background while capturing? If so, shut them down. Don't multitask. Also try doing a fresh restart of your PC before capturing.

2) What codec/format are you capturing to? Huffy? MJPEG? MPEG-2?

3) What resolution & bitrate settings are you using during capturing?

4) What source are you capturing from? TV, VHS, digicam, etc? Poor VHS sources can lead to dropped frames.

5) How much memory does your PC have? (just in case that's relevant)

6) Is your capture drive a physically seperate drive, or is it the same drive you have your OS and/or other programs on, only partitioned? Also, do you have UDMA/DMA enabled?
I just thought that knowing these additional things might also be helpful to someone in answering your questions or giving other recommendations (but surely try what Kwag said, 'cause he's always on the ball! )

Good luck,
-d&c

Ok I did what you told me I did install virtuadubsync and the drivers as well but I still have the sample problem ,today I was capturing a tv show to avi with the frame rate at 29.97 using the jpeg(I also have tried with huffyuv ) codec and like I say I was dropping alot of frames and also I wasn't running any tasks on the background I'm capturing to my D drive which is a partition of my C drive, also can someone tell me how to enable DMA to my D drive (my D drive is a NTFS partition)
Any help will be apreciated!!!

Note: After the installation of the drives I can't use the software(tv tuner) that came bundled with the card anymore ...sniff

That is a problem
Even though you are not running interactive apps on your drive C:, the system is doing housekeeping functions, swap, etc, on drive C:. So the drive head must "seek" far away from partition C to partition D, and that's when you loose frames. It's better if you can capture to a separate drive, best if placed on a separate IDE channel as the first device and no secondary device connected on the flat cable.
Another alternative is to get an external drive like the Maxtor drives, which have FireWire and USB 2.0. This will work really well, and you probably won't loose frames at all

Run the installer again. It will ask you if you want to uninstall.

Hey again kaos,

You managed to re-kindle my interest in video-capture (it's been a LONG time), so I decided to do a bit of brushing-up on the subject today, and then I dusted off the old capture-card .

Anyways, I came across the following threads while refreshing myself, and figured they might be of interest to you if you haven't seen them already:

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32575

http://www.dvdrhelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=157660

http://www.dvdrhelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=166660

Hope it helps,

*sidenote: I found the link in #10 of the D9 Capture-FAQ to be particularly interesting...it seems vhs resolution is not necessarily 320x240 as is often quoted...so people may actually see some benefit by encoding their vhs-caps to 480x480 (at least, this was my interpretation of the thread's findings). I always thought 352x480 was supposedly overkill when using vhs sources...but perhaps not...

*sidenote#2: For anyone wondering what resolutions to encode their directv or dishnetwork captures to, it seems that, for the most part, directv broadcasts its channels @ 544x480 resolution while dishnetwork primarily broadcasts at 480x480 (but apparently these values can sometimes fluctuate from channel to channel...and certain channels might even use 352x, 640x or 704x...from what I could gather, proprietary issues makes finding exact details on this stuff a bit tricky). Anyways, just something I never really thought about until now and figured someone else here might find interesting.

How could I make a good capture, using 2 HDs and 2 others IEDE stuffs (CD burner and DVD burner)

I'm thinking to mount some like this:
IDE 0 -> HD-system, the master device and DVD burner, the secondary
IDE 1 -> HD-storage, the master device and CDRW burner, the secondary

I don't have any idea how to place then, without use the secondary device connection. Should I use the RAID connections placed in my mobo? I don't know how.

Could you give some hints?

LaBomba

Hi LaBomba,

That setup would be ok (IDE 1 -> HD-storage for captures ), as long as you don't use the CDRW while capturing
If your machine is idle, that is, no running programs and only capturing to the second IDE controlled, that's fine.

If you really want an optimal setup, either get a high speed SCSI card and drive (Seagate Cheetah) or an external FireWire drive (Maxtor, etc.). This will require less I/O overhead, and you'll have excelent captures

I used to capture to a secondary drive but if I wanted the highest quality I had to use Huffy which would only allow me 2 hours of recording time on my 80Gig drive, not very useful if you do a lot of caps like myself so I had to switch to PicVideo at 18 or 19 quality and unfortunately you could notice the difference. I recently picked up a Hauppage WinTV PVR-250 because I had heard a lot of good things about it by the HTPC crowd over at the AVScience forum. I was interested in doing realtime SVCD's, which it does quite well. I decided for the hell of it to cap at 720x480 12Mb CBR and reencode to KVCD and I was in for a huge surprise. It actually came out better than any Huffyuv caps I had done (I know Fred would agree with me here). So now I am getting as near as possible to DVD quality TV episode KVCD's and high quality movie captures that rival my DVD backups. As an added bonus I am able to encode in TMPGEnc while capturing (the PVR-250 uses 1 to 5% cpu with the preview disabled) and I end up with manageable file sizes. I now cap at 6Mb CBR (couldn't really notice any difference) and my files come out to just over 2G per hour.

That's good news Dano
And I still have my 250 sitting in the box
I guess CQMatic and KVCDeeing is keeping me too busy
I HAVE to try that some day, and compare it to my DMR-E80 captures

Ordering my PVR-250 card today.

Is there anything I need to know about installation? I know installing the WinTVGo was a nightmare.

I assume I should uninstall the BT drivers I installed the WinTVGo with before installing the PVR-250.

Any recommendations / advice would be appreciate. I'll be using with cable TV (no digital box).
