@anyone,

I want to start this topic because I will be driving more and gas is $2.69 (reg)
a gallon. With a setup that provides me with audio directions (turn-by-turn)
would save time and money. Has anyone put together a setup using a
laptop with software to provide such capabilities. Please share.

Thanks

-BP

Hi BP,

There are several options.
You can but "Streets and Trips" (Microsoft) http://www.microsoft.com/streets/default.mspx , together with a GPS receiver, and use it in a notebook in your car.
Or you can buy a portable GPS receiver (Magellan), and carry it in your car. There's a model with speech synthesis that will talk to you as you're driving, and guide you to your final destination.
Or buy one of the new cars with included GPS system

That last option is very cool
A friend of mine bought his wife a new SUV, and it has just that
It even "beeps" just prior to left/right turns you have to make, and guides you with voice all the way to your target.

I think the best option is to buy the magellan, because it's portable, it includes maps, and there's a voice model.

@Kwag,

Thanks, I like Magellan, but $1,000 bucks is a little expensive and a whole
lot cheaper than a new SUV equipted with a similiar device.

In Europe at least there are extention to PDA (palm, pocket PC) including a GSM antenna and the TomTom software. That is cheap, if you already have the palm of course.
