Sorry guys, I can't show you my desk, too much confidential app from my office. By the way I never use any background so...
But I want to suggest you something : instead of having the icone for thunderbird or firefox on your desktop, do a task bar on 2 lines, and put a toolbar in the first line with all the icones you need. Look at mine :

This work either on win2k (like here) or winXP.

I also had 2 lines secondary toolbar.
My desktop are 3 monitors (maybe later i could post a pic) with the main toolbar at left side, with groups, internet, my pc, my networked pcs (3), games, etc. and another (secondary or third toolbar at the right side with another app groups, burning tools, video tools, audio tools, general usseful apps (rename files, comparing text files, etc.), etc.
