Troppix 1.2 was just released.
http://troppix.net/
Troppix is a live CD Linux distribution, which is what I use to cra.. (cough**) I mean,
audit my wireless "neighbourhood"
You can use it to see what's available around your home, and cra.. (cough*) I mean "
borrow" WEP keys from "the air", for instructional purposes *only* (yeah, right! (cough*))
For more information on this topic, see this tutorial, which is already included in the Troppix distribution: http://www.cr0.net:8040/code/network/aircrack/
You should have a good card, the best ones right now are "Atheros" based, like the D-Link DWL-G650
More cards and info also on the link above.
So, enjoy snooping, I MEAN, browsing your wireless neighbourhood

How does this relate to the Backtrack distro?
I've never used Troppix, but i find Auditor and his successor, Backtrack, very good distro's for penetration testing and security assessments.

Hi gamma,
Indeed, Backtrack2 is the best thing I've seen for cracking WEP APs (for test purposes, of course )
And that's the live CD I use everytime I have to do some kind of penetration test (Network wise, that is )

I'm also looking into WPA-PSK cracking. It is also possible, but, the PSK must be badly chosen in order to break it within an acceptable time.

Well the major sitback on WPA is that currently the only workable attack is a bruteforce attack on the PSK.
As for WEP, that a matter of minutes indeed! Especially with the recently released aircrack-ptw tool, which only needs around 40,000 IVS for a >95 succes rate

It is for testing your own network security, right?
Look for aircrack-ptw, then you don't need around a million of IV's but around 200,000 wil suffice.

I am interested in cracking my stepdad's uncles network. I also need a little bit of help trying to infiltrate his computer. We are suspicious of his computing activities, also I am trying to find a hidden camera his brothers suspect him of inside the house. He has gone off the deep end since my grandfather passed away. So i will probably use this live cd to detect his wireless network, but I wanted to see if any of you guys has any info on how to get inside his computer from there. If i had physical access to his computer it would be a different story, but he has this computer in his black ford van, which me and my cousins call his command center.
So basically i am asking if there is anyway to sniff out the data his wireless camera is sending, and how to break into his computer when i have access to his network. Also I have access to the router, all i would have to do is plug into a port.

WOW !!! Calm down please !
Isn't it a federal crime to enter into one's computer in USA ? Actually it is in France. So please remember that :
