I was defragmenting my hard drive today, when I came across a file that could not be defragmented because it was too large. I don't know what this file does, but it is 8 GB (!!) in size, and I would like to know if it is safe to delete...

It is located here:

c:\documents and settings\MYNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\myname@email.com\SharingM etadata\Working\

And the file is:

SimilarityTable_1

It is 8,388,608 kB in size, and was last modified 5 days ago.

I should add I recently upgraded my MSN 7.5 to Windows Live Messenger 8 Beta.

Anyone know what this file is and if it is safe to delete?

Thanks!
Icarus

Other than doing what Phil suggests , I found out this is likely a bug of sorts with the new messenger beta.

If you are having the same problem, see here for info:

It's created as a hidden system file by the new live messenger client, nobody seems to know quite what its for but it's doubtful the new client will function 100% correctly if you just delete it.

As Dialhot suggested, remove the live messenger beta, then delete the file if its not removed for you. If you want a decent messenger client try Gaim or if you want to flip a little cash into the equation Trillian

Or try Miranda-IM the smallest Instant Messenger on the internet.
It's kind of a raw ugly tool but you can load a lot of plugins to make it look really nice .
Like this http://darkride.h0sted.org/files/Miranda_im_xp_aqua.jpg.
So take a look in here http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.ph...st&p=587100530.
All is explained and it looks very good.
I'm using it on my laptop because MSN just waists a loooot of RAM and Miranda is very gentle on the memory used.
I love it and BTW it's Open Source Software .
