Kwag,

In

http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1287

you say to use force film. Ok fine, I fed the force-film d2v to FitCD selecting

multiplexing: TMPGEnc VCD MPEG-1
authoring: Nero 5.5
source: anamorphic DVD
destination: 3/4 DVD small anamorphic
2 blocks overscan

The avs is only a few lines with TemporalSmoother commented. Do I use it (what's it for)?

The avs was then fed to TMPGEnc with the KVCDx3 template to encode video only. Left framerate at 23.976. Tried to mux resulting m1v using bbmpeg with a HeadAC3he-produced mp2 & got out-of-sync audio and choppy video in the final mpg/vcd. bbmpeg also displayed hundreds (thousands?) of underflow errors the whole time it was making the mpg.

What mistakes did I make?

Hi melmo,

Seems your muxing was incorrect. Follow this thread and look at the BBMpeg screenshot: http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic....6e07d81b5385c7

Ok will give it a try. I'm re-creating the m1v as I type since I tossed it in disgust. The first one goes forward a while & then visibly steps back a couple frames before continuing on throughout the whole movie. I have suspicions the new one might be bad too since some settings in DVD2AVI or TMPGEnc could be wrong or missing.

This is just a standard widescreen NTSC DVD...should I have used any or all of the following for TMPGEnc after setting force film in DVD2AVI?

TemporalSmoother(2,2)
Inverse Telecine (it's 29.97 in the VOBs)
Deinterlace

turn force film off???

All help is appreciated.

Thanks,
melmo

Use temporal filter only if your source is dirty. Even if it is a DVD. Some are badly authored and do need that. Use Force FILM. No need to deinterlace. And just encode with the template set as it is 23.976fps

Kwag,

You've helped so much & I'm almost there . One more hurdle to go.

I previewed the m1v made by TMPGEnc in Power DVD & it looks ok. The mp2 generated by HeadAC3he (AC3->mp2) plays fine in Media Player. The problem is bbmpeg won't mux them! It makes a mpg (without any errors!!!) that appears to play fine in Power DVD but there's no audio. It's obvious too cause the mpg is only 2-3mb bigger than the m1v. Media Player won't play the muxed mpg at all but it will play the m1v and mp2 separately.

bbmpeg settings were:

Program stream type: VCD
VBR: checked
Write program end code: checked
No other check boxes
Forced mux rate (in 50 bytes/sec units): 0
Pack options, Buffer sizes, and Startup delay all per screenshot

I'm thinking of trying bbmpeg again with VBR unchecked. The mp2 is also a 160kbps VBR dual channel; should I have made it CBR?

Melmo,

Try muxing it with Tmpgenc. I could never get bbmpeg to work properly myself for one reason or another, so I mux with tmpgenc and it seems to work just fine!

Just got bbmpeg to cooperate by feeding it a CBR instead of a VBR mp2. Everything else was the same.

I've got the process down & will try a different movie next. Thanks very much to all who helped.

Finally, I'm still unclear about using force FILM in the beginning. Suppose you're working on a 29.97fps movie that just gets trashed by force FILM & you turn it off. What changes have to be made & where? The templates specify 23.976. Would de-interlacing need to be checked? What about inverse telecine?
