Have used DVD2AVI to extract and downsample the audio, as per the newbie guides. THis works fine, although when I play it back through my TVthe audio levels are lower than other input devices. Is this normal?? Is there any way of boosting it??

You could try encoding the audio with HeadAC3he and checking the "Booster" box.
