Hello all, first of all, i think this is a bad a*s forum. cause it answers alot of the newbie questions, but here is one for you. I have a PAL DVD,25fps, and is 136 minutes (Web-Guy) I captured it using the DVD2AVI without force film, then used the TMPG and converted it to VCD NTSC.mcf @ 29.fps. It looks okay, it just takes longer to convert from PAL to NTSC. If I use your KVCD template and load it, it says that it will come out as 23.9fps. The usual template I use is at 29 fps, my question is that will it work the same if i burn the 23.9fps VCD. Will it play like the 29 fps VCD. I'm new at this, so if this questions sounds dumb, please forgive me. Thanks.
Can someone direct me to a guide to converting a PAL DVD to a NTSC VCD?

Why did you convert it to NTSC?. Just use the KVCD PAL template to make a PAL VCD. It should play fine in just about any NTSC DVD player.
It's not like a PAL DVD that you can't play in most NTSC DVD players. VCD's are something else!.

Converting PAL to NTSC@23.9fps has an certain appeal cause PAL is fixed to 25fps and has an higher resolution so you wont get 120 mins on one disk most of the times. Andreas discussed this in his kvcd evaluation thread.

Unfortunately there is no solution in this thread, just the statement that you cant fit as much on an PAL VCD than on an NTSC VCD.
When I get some time, maybe in the next cycle of the Universe, I try if I can find something on that topic ...

Sorry Kwag,
I completely skippd your post, So your saying that if I have a PAL DVD that won't play in an NTSC DVD player, I should use your KVcd Pal Template and it should then play as a VCD on my DVD player. I have a Sony NS300. VCD works fine on it.
One other question? My PAL DVD will play on my PS2, but the PS2 says that the T.V. doesn't match. Now, I let my friend use it and he said that on his X-Box, it picked up and plays fine. Do you think it's the X-box that made it work, or do you think he has one of those mulit-system t.v. It doens't say on the T.V. that it can play PAL and NTSC. THanks.

dre20,

I have an apex that plays pal dvd's and pal vcd's no probs.
It has been upgraded to a regionless player, so i can watch region 2, U.K. dvd's. Im in the middle of converting a U.K. dvd region2, and two other {regionfree or regionless but still pal format} dvd's to kvcd, kdvd, skdvd, skvcd, skvcdx2, ksdvcdx2 or whatever its called today, (K, solo broma hermano--).

The process did take longer than ntsc to ntsc kvcd. I could've kept it to kvcd pal, but some of my other players do not play pal. Either it shows up in black n white, or the picture freezes and stutters or freezes altogether. thus, im converting to ntsc with tmpgenc.
My toshiba tv's display the pal vcd's from my apex fine, so it may be a player issue, not sure.

These kvcd's are all over two hours and fit fine on one cdr, i actually got a three hour one to fit on just under 800 mb's from pal. I did dvd2avi them at film, and adjusted the cq and bitrate of the ntsc kvcd template.

I dont think there's an easy way to do pal to ntsc. Even using dvd2svcd or dvd2kvcd, the output is still a pal vcd (with default settings).
Oh yeah, i had to patch my dvd-rom to be able to watch the dvd r2 pal, on my pc, however, dodripp and dvd2svcd read the dvd fine and ripped it.

Que pasa raza...
Hey man thanks for the info. What Model apex do you have? I wanted to go out and buy one this weekend, but they have the 1100 and 1200 on sale this weekend.

Hey tell me how it goes if you successfully convert the Pal DVD to kvcd that you are working on.

I think it' your toshiba that let's you play them, cause i heard all of those are play PAL and NTSC.

Hey I have the PAL DVD, How do you convert them to fit into one CD-R. You mentioned above that you got it by DVD2AVI at film. What is FILM...THE forced film or what? I just load it and leave the settings alone. I ripped one Vob file (.99 gib) (about 31 minutes of the movie) and did the DVD2AVI and then put into the tmpgenc and attached the KVCD template( the one to fit the movie into one cd-r) and then ran it. The 30 minute video came out to be 485mb size. It looks good, but only 30 minute on one CD-r. What did I do wrong. I know you said that you played with the CQ and Bitrate, but i am new at this. I understand that every 4 of cq is like 10 mb or something like that. AM I right?

The thing about ripping. The smart ripper ripped it just fine and I can actually watch the whole movie on my Compaq DVD player on the Computer.

dre,
i have an apex ad-1500, with the firmware updated for region free and it claims , macrovision free, i dont use it , so it may be,,and besides that would probably be against the law in one state or another.

The apex actually has a menu choice to for ntcs, pal or multi. I have a total of two toshiba tv's and a hitachi, an older one, with different players, that's why i suspected it was the players.

The pal dvd , r2, UK, came out good, at 352x240, but i forgot to adjust the aspect ratio. I took an additional 2.5 hours to encode. But it was the easiest method i found in a hurry. So, im going to redo it.

Dvd2avi was set to force film, film and pal are similar rates, but try doing a full movie encode. CQ , i think optimizes better when it has the whole movie to spread out bit/pixels <<--- Kwag explained it a while back, but i cant find that thread. I knocked down the quality to about 65, and the bitrate to about 1800, and because the movie was 16:9, it has a lot of black on the borders, it was able to compress better. I also lowered my audio to either 160 or 128. You may want to try keeping it at 192 or so, but experiment. Do a project file , d2v, for the whole movie, do a test encode. I do two, one at about the middle of the movie {settings, source range}, and one running from the beginning for about 10 to 20 minutes. that gives me megabytes/minutes times number of minutes of my movie.
I hit about 696 to 780 mb for a two hour film. Im using the original kvcd template, with the 2.0 revision, (1-18-3-1), before the kxsdvd, or maldito ksxvcd, or kvcd 2.0 or 3.0 or kvdv or kdvd, or kvhs, or ksdvd or whichever acronym we're using today.

smartripper picked mine up too,,,but i wanted to play it with powerdvd, and it only gave me the option to change the region 4 times. so i disabled the fu*k*r. , and now powerdvd doesnt complain.

ztr,,

I tried to use the regular kvcd template this weekend. I got the black and white and the picture was blocky and fuzzy. I tried to play witht he settings, but got no luck. I tried the regular template that comes with the TMPENC and it worked fine, but i think i'll stop while i'm ahead. This whole VCD thing is taking way too long. For one movie 116 minutes. KVCD was 32 hours. And the regular VCD template was around 9 hours fro each cd for a total of 18 ours of processing. Is it my computer cause I have an Amthlon 450MHZ. I know that isn't fast, but dos it usally take that long. Oh well, thanks for your help guys.

dre,
which template did you use? the very very first one is probably the best one. other than the kvcdvd-rwram x 2 ones ,
32 horas? Damn, dats crazy. I used to use my old spare 333a to do spare svcd's and that took on average 43 days, j/k 43 hours to do.

Well, i tried a half kdvdx1 template, , at 352x480, leaving the bitrate and changing the audio to 48k, on my first PAL to NTSC conversion. I tell ya, although the template was supposed to be for one cd, and since i didnt change any parameters like before, i notice half way through that the file was gonna take more than 800mb's. So i just let it run. The result was an ntsc mpg1 vbr movie @ 29.97 (becuz of my apex) at 1,452 gigs.
But when i played it on my tv--DAMNNN.. i could swear that the quality was better than the o.g. pal dvd. audio was in synch, picture was smooth, clear, detailed. Worth the two cd encode. Since i change the template down from 704 to 352, i tweaked the aspect ratio to center-keep aspect ratio. So far, so good.

i have a apex 1500 and when i try to play a 480x576 pal svcd burned from nero and it doesnt work. the screen goes up and down real fast and the picture turns gray. i had to re-encode it to ntsc 480x480 29.9 svcd to get it to work.
