I advise you.... don't convert mpeg 1 to kvcd!
The quality is very very very poor...

It's not recommendable.

Yep, just as nogod said
A recompress of an MPEG-1 (VCD) to MPEG-1 is very crappy
Unless it's a very high bitrate MPEG-1 without visible macroblocks

renaming the AVSEQ01.dat to AVSEQ01.mpg works however when i play the file on the pc i get green blocks all over the screen.

I know this means a codec problem but before i encoded the file to vcd it played no problem.

Now that i know about kvcd im basically wanting to convert all of my 2 disk vcd's in to 1 disk kvcd

Ofcourse on a vcd the movie file is AVSEQ01.dat and wont play on my system.

Is there an easier way to convert the .dat back to its original state?
renaming the file just isnt good enough!

i have also tried vcd easy but when importing the .dat file in to the tools menu i got an error and it wont allow me to get past that.

What do you do with AVSEQ01.dat files?

Thanks

Use VCDEasy to convert .dat into true .mpg
(see the complete instruction in this other thread opened on the same subject : http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=47562#47562)

I tried that and got the following error:

unknown chunk id [] encountered (The file is not a MPEG file with RIFF header [.dat file])

Video : 8.37 MB, 1150 Kbps, 29.970 fps, 352*240 (4:3), MPG1 = MPEG 1 (VCD), Supported

Audio : 1.64 MB, 224 Kbps, 44100 Hz, 2 channels, 0x51 = Mpeg-1 audio Layer 2 [0xc0], Supported

that is what avicodec told me about the sample of the movie which is in mpg format.

The rest of this movie is in a bin file, i extract the bin file to my hard drive and i get a file structure like this

CDI
EXT
MPEGAV
SEGMENT
VCD

I know if i just burn this to disk it will play on my dvd no problem but it will still be 2 disks, i need to merge the disks together.

When i play the AVSEQ01.DAT file on my computer from the extracted ISO it has visual problems with that dreaded large green blocks.

All i want to do is to get this vcd back to its orginal state so i can atleast view it without any problems on my system so i can then play with it as a .mpg file.

As i say when i put the .dat file in to dvd2avi it also shows the green blocks and when i put it in to vcd easy i get the error above.

This is way over my head right now which is why i ask those in this forum with much wider knowledge then me on this type of thing.

If every players give you green blocks and VCDEasy complains about "this is not a VCD", then your bin is probably corrupted.

I thought this myself, but it also happens when i simply put a vcd disk in to my drive and copy it to the hard drive.

These are VCD's that work no problem as i converted them to vcd before i knew about kvcd.

They play in my dvd player no pproblem but when i copy them to my hard drive i get green blocks too

Much faster and safer to use VCDGear to convert dat->mpg .
Resulted mpg u can reencode or just burn on new CDr - it'll play perfectly .
