I was just wondering what sort of CQ values people were getting for their video using the new Motion Adaptive script.

I use the FULL-D1 script and try to fit three movies to a disc, this works out at 1.43gb per film inc. audio.

For Black Hawk Down (2hr18min) using TOK I got a CQ of 39.96, this may seem very low but the video still looks better than CQ 62 using the old script.

Has anyone else had these sort of CQ's, if so did the video look good on a TV, as I've only watched the samples on my PC.

Hi beany,

It was reported by a fellow in the Spanish forum that TMPGEnc 5.13 produces lower CQ values for the same file size as TMPGEnc 2.511. He is 100% correct
So apparently the latest version of TMPEG has some internal variables, etc. that change the CQ curve. So we can't really depend on the CQ value. We have to depend on our eyes by looking at the sample clip. The test conducted was with an identical .avs script. So something definitely changed in TMPEG. Apparently the CQ in 2.513 will be about 8 points lower than with version 2.511.

How does that happen? So 100% in 2.513 is like 108% in 2.511? Strange. What is CQ based on?

Some internal TMPGEnc variables
That's why we can't rely on CQ values, and must rely on file size prediction.

beany101uk,

Just a little tip to get much more quality with your encodes: do the prediction using all your movies togheter. If you want to use any prediction program like TOK, chain them togheter in the same AVS when predicting. This avoids having two excellent-looking movies with one looking bad because altrough they had about the same lenght in minutes, the last had much more action than the two others. It would be much better to have all three looking great. A good example happens when you try to put the two first Lord Of The Rings in the same disc. Two Towers is much less compressible!

How do you do this? What decoder/AviSynth supports this? I am really stumped.. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I got it work with AviSynth v2.08 but not with v2.52 for some reason... could it be the version of mpeg2dec3.dll??

SodGwad,

I actually create one AVS for each movie and do manual prediction, because I am generally converting AVI files and they need external subtitles and have different resolutions (640xXXX, 576xXX, 616xXXX that I convert to 720x480). So I create one AVS for each movie and predict manually for the three toghether. But with DVD sources I thought it would be possible to open all three in the same AVS, this way you would be able to use tok or other tool (which I don't use).
But what exactly are you doing now? If you are using more than one mpeg2source, maybe it doesn't support more than 1 instance in the same script in the 2.5 version, some functions have this limitation (like GripCrop)

I am converting the Band of Brothers Series from DVD. I have all 10 Eps and am trying to put em all on 2 or 3 DVD discs so that I can watch em when I travel. I usually do this when I travel. I choose a few movies, back em up and take those with me. I am just trying to reduce the amount of discs that I am going to have to carry.

I was able to successfully chain five eps together in one AVS but only with AviSynth 2.08. I have yet to be successful with 2.52. Since my target is Full-D1 16x9, I remove GripCrop and GripBorders from the script. I know that it is not the version of DVD2AVI that I am using since I was unsuccessful using both versions. I'll stick with 2.08 for now...
