I looked a bit further in the source, but I couldn't find (or understand) other settings than the matrixes, gop isn't mentioned.

I use Windoze to play, and real OSs (FreeBSD, NetBSD, OS X) to work

Run ./ffmpeg | grep gop
And you'll see the command line argument for GOP.
If ffmpeg is in your path, then run ffmpeg | grep gop

I new that
Anyway, I yust compiled the last ffmpeg_cvs with the kvcd_matrix but now I get an error when converting.
Since I'am not a coder I will stick to adapting the transcode kvcd, with some help from the transcode mailinglist I got the fps up from 8 to 12 (mpeg2), next step trying to make an mpeg1 kvcd stream.

I'll give transcode a try. I didn't really like the result of fmpeg
Neither with the default matrix that is in the current CVS download ( which is derived from an old KVCD matrix, after looking carefully at it or with KVCD's "Notch" matrix.
I believe most of the code in ffmpeg is based on the original MPEG Group's test model code, which is full of bugs.

I used ffmpeg to make vcd files from the commandline:
ffmpeg -i input.avi -b 1150 -r 25 -s 352x288 -ab 224 -ar 44100 -hq output.mpeg
This gave me nice video.
transcode is a frontend for the mjpegtools (mpeg2enc,mp2enc), bbmpeg (included) and also ffmpeg I yust found out.

If someone is interested, I found a ffmpeg win32 exe (compiling it myself still doesn't work, but I'am close)
You can get it at:

Enjoy
