It's true.
But, in my opinion, the ffmpegx 0.0.9 in my Powermac 7300 G3 300 RAM works as fast as tmpgenc in Celeron 700 256 RAM. It's useful because I can encode with my old mac as fast as in my notebook.
The mpeg1 that I've encoded with ffmepgx has a better quality - VCD 352x288 and 352x576-than the tmpgenc ones. Fantastic, because the quality -almost for me- is greater.
I think it's a useful tool, but the "main" problem is that for my standalone player i have to demux+mux with tmpgenc. Ok, i'll have a win computer and i can do it!
For a beginner like me, it isn't a charm to customize tmpgenc+other win tools to do a good mpeg1. So it is a easy and powerful tool like ffmpegx, because I don't have to know advanced terms to manage it.
I wonder to do all the process!
1. encode
2. repair the mpeg to player compatiblity
3. do bin/cue
4. burn
I've solved all the parts with the mac, except the number 2.
And I think lot of people could do more than they can do know with the mac.
