Be more specific, how are they distorted? What do they look like? Squeezed? Stretched? Noisey? Discolored? Rolling? Jumpy?
The H (Horizontal) resolutions are different for a reason. You don't choose one just because it's the one you want, you have to choose the one according to what country you live in. Different TV systems are used, PAL and NTSC.
If you live in the US, Japan, and a whole bunch of other places, choose the template with the H resolution 480, because that's what NTSC uses.
If you live in England and some other places, choose 576, because that's what PAL uses.
This is why I need more information on your "distorted" picture.
If it is vertically stretched (skinny people), most likely you are in a PAL country but are trying to use the NTSC template (h=480) and your TV is trying to stretch it to 576.
If it is vertically squashed (fat people), most likely you are in an NTSC country but trying to use the PAL template (h=576) and your TV is trying to squash it down to 480.
But because I created this answer with such limited information, I could be totally wrong.
Hope this helped.
