Hi

I have a problem that I can't solve and it has me doubting everything I thought I knew about using TMPGEnc.
When I have an 23.976fps avi rip and I want to encode it to skvcd, I load the KVCDx3-MPEG-2-NTSCFilm template which specifies 23.976fps(29.97 internally) and 3:2 pulldown is to be used. After encoding, my MPEG jitters or jumps at approx 1 sec intervals. If I change the settings to 29.97fps non-interlace, the encoded MPEG is nice and smooth but my CQ goes way down.

Is TMPGEnc screwing up the encode or am I supposed to use the latter setting? If you say pulldown is the correct option, I can provide more detail about the problem. I feel stupid for asking such a basic question, but, as I said, I'm at that place where I don't seem sure of anything.

Thanks

the "3:2 pulldown during playback" option is self-explained : the 3:2 pulldown is done by the player, when you are watching the video. If your player can't do that correctly, you are facing a problem. And this can be solved by applying the pulldown during the encode, but that drop the CQ as you already saw.

But was it suprising is that all DVD with movies use 3:2 pulldown while playback; So your player isn't abble to read a DVD smoothly ? Weird...

I have a new Sony DVD player with progressing scan and pulldown capability. The same problem occurs in WinDVD, PowerDVD, Media Player Classic, etc.
I think TMPGEnc suddenly started doing this. Previous to downloading and experimenting with KVCD and SKVCD templates and CQMatic I was having no problem encoding MPEG-2 files with pulldown.
I don't know what TMPGEnc is up to. Does the 1 sec interval mean anything?

Thanks

Did you use a GOP of 24
If you did, change it to 18
That's the only thing I can think of.

It is set to 24. I'll change it and let you know.

It occurs to me that I never successfully used 3:2 pulldown. More than a year ago I deleted the film templates and I just forgot about it.
Everytime I encode at 23.976fps(29.97 internal) with pulldown, the resulting mpeg is not smooth. That goes for SVCD, SKVCD, you name it. I upgraded to the latest version 2.521.58.169 with absolutely no change. I checked and confirmed that the output mpeg is flagged for 29.97fps.
I ran an encode at 23.976fps non-interlace and it plays the same as my pulldown attempt.
The only way I can get a smooth playing mpeg is if I set my output to 29.97fps non-interlaced.
I performed all of the above on another computer with exactly the same results, leaving me to thing that TMPGEnc is the problem, and not my system.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Jimblob,

Have you tried encoding a DVD source, via .d2v project file, and see if you get the same effect
Maybe it's a problem with this movie you're trying to encode

You are correct. It is the movie I'm trying to encode...in fact the last 3 movies I downloaded. I'm not exactly sure what is wrong with them, but I went back to my rip library and had no difficulties at all.
I will look deeper into those 3, bit I will be okay. They say trouble comes in threes...what frustration.

Thanks all

I ahve this same problem. Only way to get proper working 23,976 video is to encode normally 23,976 (interlaced) and run pulldown.exe to add those pulldown flags.

Hum hum...

BTW, Paulus reported the same problems with Xvids sources and solved it by updating the codec on his PC.

You surely do a mistake here : applying 3:2 pulldown is actually converting a progressive 23.976 MPEG2 into an interlaced 29.970 one.

That is also why pulldown is impossible on MPEG1 (MPEG1 is progressive only) even if pulldown.exe gives you the impression you can do that.

WOW! I have made about 100 svcds like this And all of those are working quite well. I am using ToK and I think that DIKO works like this too (ok i am not sure)?!? But with ToK (tmpgenc) it will encode 23,976 (interlaced) and then I just run pulldown.exe and everything seems to be okay. I think bbmpeg says: 2:3 pulldown detected ?!?!?! Not 3:2 ??

He always says that as it is indeed the correct name of the function.
Your source is clearly not interleaved else you will obtain something like a "20 fps double interlaced" mpeg on the end .
Go there and you will understand why :

This makes my head so dizzy....

I think that I have done everything right, but I can't explaint it right ?!? If avi source is 23.976 (prgressive) I encode it 23,976 and add pulldown flags with pulldown.exe. And enjoy watching it with my dvdplayer
And I am talking about svcd(mpeg-2).

If that is not right way, what is ?

That is clearly what I'm saying from the begining : your 23.976 intermediate MPEG2 file (the one you obtained from the progressive avi and on which you apply the pulldown that will convert it into 29.970interlaced) is progressive !
