I am having a problem opening an AVI in virtualdub, very similar to a previous thread but it reads.

Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'dvsd' (unknown)

I could do with some advise on this.

Thanks in advance

You miss the correct codec for this format but I never see it before.
Where did you found this source ?

I think you need a digital video codec, like Mainconcept DV Codec. Take a look www.mainconcept.com.
I don't know if there is a free download, neither other DV codec.

It uses the DV codec (same as digital video cameras). Go here: http://users.tpg.com.au/mtam/install_panvfwdv.htm...

It lets me read AVIs captured from my Canon ZR40 in both Virtualdub and AviSynth, and you can also save DV files with it (as long as the source is 720x480/576). It might work when capturing video too, which would be nice (not as nice as HuffYUV but better than MJPEG or MPEG ).

Chroma values in NTSC are sampled in a weird way (one value for every 4x1 block of pixels) but PAL is more sane (even though I can't remember what it is right now ). I didn't really notice it from the material I captured, but that could be cause I'm partially colourblind...
